Tom Jones Recalls “Cold” BBC Exit from The Voice UK

Published on

Legendary singer Sir Tom Jones has spoken candidly about his disappointment and shock following his dismissal from the UK version of talent show The Voice by BBC executives. The Welsh icon, a familiar face on the show since its inception, described the handling of his departure as “sub-standard behaviour” and a “very disappointing” experience.

Early Days and Original Coaching Panel

Sir Tom was instrumental in the launch of The Voice UK on the BBC in 2012. He served as a coach for the first four consecutive seasons, appearing alongside will.i.am, Jessie J, and Danny O’Donoghue. This initial period saw the show establish its format and gain popularity, with Sir Tom becoming a recognizable and respected figure on the judging panel.

The Unexpected Axe

The turning point came ahead of the show’s fifth season when BBC bosses decided not to renew Sir Tom’s contract, opting instead to replace him with Boy George. This decision came as a significant blow to the singer, who stated he was informed of the decision without any prior consultation. He expressed his dismay at the lack of communication and the manner in which his exit was managed.

Sir Tom’s Reaction and Accusations

In his 2016 autobiography, Over The Top and Back, Sir Tom detailed his feelings. He wrote, “To say I was shocked is to put it mildly.” He clarified that his shock was not about being replaced, but rather the way the decision was communicated. He characterized the BBC’s approach as “sub-standard behaviour” and found the entire process “very disappointing.”

Sir Tom also famously described the BBC as a “cold place.” He recounted spending the summer anticipating the show’s recommissioning and had heard rumours about potential judge changes, such as Paloma Faith potentially replacing Rita Ora. The abrupt nature of his dismissal left him feeling blindsided.

BBC’s Defence and Contractual Stance

The BBC, in response to the controversy, defended its decision. Officials stated that the final coaching line-up for the fifth season was confirmed only the day before the announcement, and that Sir Tom’s representatives had been informed prior to the public reveal. They also emphasized that Sir Tom’s contract had concluded after the fourth series and was not extended.

Sir Tom acknowledged that “nobody has the right to think of themselves as a permanent fixture.” However, when his management team questioned the decision, he claimed that BBC executives simply stated he was “out of contract.” Reflecting on this, he remarked, “Indisputable as a bald statement of fact, I guess. But what a cold place the BBC is. Sometimes you wonder whether it is run by humans or a machine in the basement.” This sentiment highlighted his perception of a lack of human consideration in the decision-making process.

Return to The Voice and Show’s Transition

Despite the contentious exit from the BBC, Sir Tom maintained an appreciation for the show itself. Following a one-season hiatus, he made a triumphant return to The Voice UK when the program transitioned from the BBC to ITV. He rejoined the coaching panel for the 2026 series, alongside fellow original coach will.i.am, as well as Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones.

The ITV iteration of The Voice UK has seen further changes to its coaching lineup. For the 2026 series, the panel welcomed new coach Kelly Rowland, who joined after LeAnn Rimes’ departure. Kelly Rowland, renowned for her success with Destiny’s Child and her subsequent solo career, brought a fresh dynamic to the show.

Current Broadcast Details

The Voice UK continues to air on Saturdays on ITV1. Episodes are also available for streaming on ITVX, and the show is broadcast on STV and its player service, STV Player, ensuring broad accessibility for viewers across the UK.
