The decision to re-sod the field was prompted by feedback from players who experienced issues with the Kentucky bluegrass surface during preseason matches. Reports and player accounts indicated bald patches and loose sod flying during tackles, leading to a player describing the field condition as “a** right now” to The Athletic. Although the original turf met NFL standards for safety and playability, the team opted for a full replacement to ensure optimal conditions.
Pete Guelli, president of business operations for the Bills, stated in a release, “We’re committed to having the best possible playing surface for our players.” He explained that with a stretch of three consecutive home games early in the season, the timing was deemed appropriate for the re-sodding project. Installation of the new surface was scheduled to begin on Monday and be completed by the end of the week, with continuous monitoring planned for the field and other stadium aspects.
Guelli further elaborated in comments to The Buffalo News, emphasizing the organization’s dedication to providing the best playing surface. “You can be happy with the performance and playability and still make the change,” he said. “As an organization, we’re committed to having the absolute best possible playing surface for the players. If it’s even slightly better, we’re going to make the change and err on the side of performance.”
Fan Uproar Over Sightlines in New Facility
The turf issue is the latest in a series of criticisms directed at the new Highmark Stadium since its opening. Fans attending early events and practices have voiced significant dissatisfaction with compromised views from various seating sections. Videos and photographs shared on social media highlighted instances where lower-level seats, even those near the 50-yard line, offered obstructed views due to paneling. Spectators in the upper deck also reported that staircase railings and glass partitions interfered with sightlines to the field and end zones.
Further frustration stemmed from the design of certain seating areas, particularly those with personal seat licenses (PSLs) and expensive lower-tier tickets. Standing platforms in these sections were noted to completely block the view of the opposite side of the field for many attendees. Some supporters felt misled, claiming assurances were given that safety features like railings would not impede views, contrary to what was experienced.
Architectural Firm Acknowledges Design Challenges
The architectural firm responsible for the stadium’s design, Populous, acknowledged that certain sightline flaws were unavoidable due to building code compliance and the goal of maximizing fan proximity to the field. Jonathan Mallie, a global director at Populous, explained to The Buffalo News that the design aimed to create a heightened atmosphere and bring fans closer to the action. “You will find some level of obstruction in every stadium in the world,” Mallie stated, adding that the intention was to create an immersive experience for “Bills Mafia.”
Mallie also pointed out that modern NFL stadiums must adhere to stricter safety code requirements compared to older venues. The firm also focused on designing larger concourses to improve crowd flow and spectator comfort. Despite these efforts, the combination of player feedback on the field and fan concerns over sightlines presents ongoing challenges for the new $2.2 billion stadium as it settles into its inaugural season.
