The Metropolitan Museum of Art has canceled its planned 2027 Costume Institute exhibition, “John Galliano: Horizons.” The decision follows a statement from the British designer himself, who indicated that “it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time.” The exhibition was slated to be a comprehensive retrospective of Galliano’s four-decade career, a period marked by significant influence on the fashion industry. However, both Galliano and the museum faced considerable opposition regarding the appropriateness of a retrospective for a designer whose legacy is intertwined with deeply offensive remarks.

John Galliano, a graduate of London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins in 1984, quickly established himself as a groundbreaking force in British fashion. His early work, such as his 1984 graduate collection “Les Incroyables and Les Merveilleuses,” drew inspiration from the post-French Revolution era, setting a precedent for his signature narrative-driven shows. Galliano consistently presented collections that told complete, elaborate stories, transforming runway presentations into theatrical events.

His influence extended beyond his eponymous brand. In 1995, he made history as the first British designer to lead a French Haute Couture house when he was appointed creative director of Givenchy. Later that year, a French court convicted Galliano of “public insults” based on origin, religion, race, or ethnicity. At the time, Galliano attributed his behavior to addiction to alcohol, sleeping pills, and Valium. In the subsequent years, he has publicly apologized, spoken about his struggles with addiction and his recovery journey, and sought to re-establish his career. He worked with Maison Margiela, departing in 2024, and has more recently collaborated with the fast-fashion brand Zara to “re-author” elements of their collections.

However, any contemporary discussion of Galliano’s career inevitably circles back to the events of 2011, casting a long shadow over his professional endeavors, even as he continues to find work in the industry.

Wintour has been a consistent supporter of Galliano, describing his decision to withdraw the exhibition as “very courageous and a measure of the man he is.” She was instrumental in facilitating his return to the fashion world through a residency at Oscar de la Renta’s studio in 2013. De la Renta himself lauded Galliano as “one of the most talented men” he had ever encountered, advocating for second chances for individuals of such talent.

The announcement of Karl Lagerfeld, a figure criticized for past fat-phobic, racist, and misogynistic comments, as the subject of the 2023 exhibition also generated significant debate.
