Shearer Worries Referees Could Hinder England’s World Cup Final Hopes

Published on

Former England captain Alan Shearer has voiced concerns that officiating decisions, including those from VAR, could potentially prevent England from reaching the World Cup final. The Three Lions are set to face Argentina in a highly anticipated semi-final clash on Wednesday, with a place in their first World Cup final since 1966 at stake.

England’s Path to the Semi-Finals

England’s journey to the last four has been characterized by resilience and determination rather than outright dominance. The team has showcased strong mentality, grit, and unity to overcome opponents, often grinding out results. This contrasts with a more fluid style of play, highlighting their ability to battle through challenging matches.

Argentina’s Similar Trajectory

World champions Argentina have mirrored England’s path, also fighting their way to the semi-final stage. Both nations have demonstrated potent attacking capabilities, scoring freely throughout the tournament. However, both have also shown vulnerabilities in defense, conceding goals in crucial moments.

Shearer’s Officiating Concerns

Shearer, who represented England in three major international tournaments, believes the outcome of the England-Argentina match could be significantly influenced by the officiating team, led by Major League Soccer referee Ismail Elfath and his VAR counterparts. He expressed alarm over what he perceives as inconsistent refereeing standards throughout the tournament.

The Premier League’s all-time leading scorer fears that Argentina might benefit from favorable decisions, suggesting a trend where “generous decisions” have gone their way. He specifically cited an incident in Argentina’s round of 16 match where a goal scored by Egypt’s Mostafa Zico was disallowed. The goal was ruled out after Lisandro Martinez was deemed to have been dispossessed in the build-up.

Shearer’s Statement on Officiating

Speaking about his concerns, Shearer stated, “I’m slightly concerned that a refereeing decision or VAR could cost us against Argentina because I think the narrative from the referees and the VAR from the start of the tournament to now has changed massively.”

He elaborated on the perceived shift in officiating philosophy, recalling a specific instance involving France’s Kylian Mbappé. “I did that France game when Kylian Mbappe was fouled, and the ref went to the screen – was told to go to the screen – and stuck with his decision when I thought it was a clear penalty. And that has totally changed over the last 10 days, two weeks, the longer the tournament’s gone on.”

Shearer further emphasized his surprise at some of the decisions favoring Argentina. “I have been amazed at some of the decisions that Argentina have had, particularly the one against Egypt where their Egyptian goal was pulled back and cancelled out. I thought that was nonsense. It is a bit of a concern when playing them.”

Referee Ismail Elfath’s Background

Ismail Elfath, 44, is no stranger to high-profile matches involving Argentinian players. He officiated the 2023 Leagues Cup final, which saw Lionel Messi secure his first trophy with Inter Miami. Additionally, Elfath served as the fourth official during the 2022 World Cup final, where Argentina defeated France in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Conclusion

As England prepares for their crucial semi-final against Argentina, the focus extends beyond the players on the pitch. The potential impact of officiating decisions looms large, with former star Alan Shearer highlighting his unease about the consistency and fairness of refereeing and VAR interventions. The match is poised to be a tense affair, where every decision could prove pivotal in determining which team advances to the World Cup final.
