Television presenter Anna Richardson has announced the death of her father, Canon Jim Richardson, who passed away at the age of 85 after a prolonged battle with vascular dementia. The news was shared by Richardson on Instagram, where she posted a series of heartfelt images of her father.

A Life of Service and Extraordinary Encounters

Canon Jim Richardson died on Thursday, June 25th, which also marked his late wife’s birthday. His final weeks were spent in hospital, where he faced complications including heart failure, pneumonia, and a collapsed lung. Despite his failing health, Richardson noted her father’s remarkable “will to live” was “astonishing.”

Anna Richardson, known for her role on the show ‘Naked Attraction’, reflected on her father’s “extraordinary life.” His journey included extensive world travel, collaboration with diverse faith groups, a meeting with the Pope, and receiving an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II. Throughout these experiences, he remained dedicated to serving his congregation within the Church of England.

In her poignant Instagram post, Richardson described her father as “fun-loving, private, difficult, thoughtful, and oh-so complex.” She shared that he “didn’t want to go just yet” but held a belief that he was transitioning to “the company of Angels.”

Reflections on Life, Death, and Dementia

Richardson’s father’s struggle with vascular dementia was a central theme in the 2024 documentary ‘Anna Richardson: Love, Loss & Dementia’. In the film, she explored the potential links between his condition and his demanding, often stressful, lifestyle as a clergyman. She highlighted factors such as his dedication to his work, poor eating habits due to being constantly on the move, lack of exercise, enjoyment of a drink in the parish, pre-existing diabetes, and being overweight, as contributors to his vascular dementia.

Reflecting on the nature of death, Richardson wrote, “Death is strange. We spend our lives trying not to talk about it, until one day, it’s the only thing in the room… We burst into this world fighting for breath, and so often we leave it in exactly the same way. It’s messy, physical, and at times, totally undignified. Just like birth.”

She recounted the final days, describing how she and her brother stayed by their father’s side in the hospital. “My Dad spent his final two weeks in hospital with heart failure, pneumonia, and a collapsed lung,” she stated. “His body may have been failing him, but his will to live was astonishing.” She spoke of feeding him grapes and tinned peaches, holding onto hope for more time together. When it became evident his heart was too weak, she and her brother moved into his room, positioning themselves like “two gargoyles guarding the entrance of a church,” accompanying him into the next world.

Richardson shared a touching black and white photograph of herself holding her father’s hand, a symbol of their final moments together. She concluded her tribute with a heartfelt message: “His last great adventure was making the Love, Loss & Dementia documentary with me for Channel 4. He was fun-loving, private, difficult, thoughtful, and oh-so complex – but he was my Dad. And I loved him… Even though he wasn’t afraid of death, he didn’t want to go just yet. He believed he was going to the company of Angels – I hope so very much that he’s right. God bless, Dad.”

A Legacy of Faith and Family

Canon Jim Richardson, originally from south-east London, felt a strong calling to the church from a young age. His ministry, primarily within the Church of England, spanned decades and took him across the globe. His work involved engaging with various faiths and building connections within his community.

His passing marks the end of a significant chapter for Anna Richardson and her family. The documentary offered a poignant look into the realities of dementia and the profound impact it has on individuals and their loved ones, highlighting the strength and complexity of family bonds in the face of illness.
