A former Department of Veterans Affairs official, Darryl John Rae, faces charges for allegedly wearing military service decorations to which he was not entitled during an Anzac Day commemoration in Sandgate, Brisbane. The 59-year-old was formally charged in May with the improper use of service decorations, stemming from an investigation into his conduct at the April 25th event.

Allegations of Misrepresented Service

Police have put forth allegations that Mr. Rae wore several medals without proper entitlement. These include the Australian Active Service Medal, the Iraq Medal, the Australian Service Medal, a Long Service Medal, the Saudi Arabian Medal for the Liberation of Kuwait, and the Timor Leste Solidarity Medal. Authorities contend that by wearing these specific decorations, Mr. Rae misrepresented his actual military service history.

Prior to these accusations, Mr. Rae had publicly presented himself as a decorated naval officer with service in the Royal Australian Navy from 1982 to 2003. He reportedly described his roles during this period as ranging from junior sailor to officer, and stated he served as both a reservist and a full-time serviceman.

Concerns Raised by RSL Queensland

An internal letter from RSL Queensland officials, reportedly obtained by The Courier Mail, indicated that Mr. Rae allegedly introduced himself to members in early 2024 as a serving RAAF wing commander, an active investigator with the Australian Defence Force, and a former lieutenant commander in the navy. The letter further detailed that “inconsistencies” in Mr. Rae’s accounts of his service history prompted a “careful and discreet” review by RSL Queensland. This review, according to the letter, “gave rise to serious and substantiated doubts” regarding the veracity of his claimed military background.

Following the internal investigation and the emergence of these doubts, Mr. Rae reportedly resigned from his position within RSL Queensland.

Court Proceedings and Legal Representation

Several individuals attended the Sandgate Magistrates Court on a recent Tuesday, anticipating Mr. Rae’s appearance to address the charge. However, Mr. Rae himself was absent from the proceedings. His legal representative, Stephen Kerin, appeared in his stead. Mr. Kerin informed the court that his client was unwell and therefore unable to attend the hearing.

The case has been scheduled for further hearing at the Sandgate Magistrates Court on July 16.

Beyond his involvement with Veterans Affairs and RSL Queensland, Mr. Rae also held a contracted position with the Queensland government. He worked within the Department of Premier and Cabinet during the period when Annastacia Palaszczuk served as Premier.
