A man imprisoned for the brutal murder of a father of nine, stabbed more than 50 times, will have his conviction overturned by the Court of Appeal.
Sean Rodgers, 38, received a minimum 18-year sentence for killing Edward Meenan in Londonderry in 2018.
Procedural Flaws Prompt Retrial
Senior judges ruled the original guilty verdict unsafe due to procedural errors. Lady Chief Justice Dame Siobhan Keegan ordered a retrial.
“We consider a retrial is appropriate in this case,” she stated.
Legal restrictions prevent disclosure of further ruling details at this stage. Rodgers remains in custody but may apply for bail later.
His solicitor, Ciaran O’Hare, highlighted: “The court has recognised there were a number of significant procedural flaws in the conduct of the Crown Court trial which undermined the fairness and safety of our client’s conviction.” He called the judgment “an important step towards justice being restored.”
