More than 1.1 million older adults in the UK remain unaware of a key Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit that provides up to £5,704 annually. Attendance Allowance supports individuals over State Pension age who require daily assistance due to a long-term illness or disability.
Who Qualifies for Attendance Allowance?
Individuals qualify if they meet these criteria: they have a physical or mental condition lasting at least six months that necessitates help with personal care or supervision for safety. Claimants must have reached State Pension age, typically 66 or older. Special rules simplify applications for those with terminal illnesses.
Residence requirements also apply, ensuring claimants have lived in the UK for a specified period. Personal care covers essential activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, mobility, medication management, and communication.
Benefit Rates and Increases
The higher rate currently stands at £110.40 per week, equating to £5,740 annually, for those needing round-the-clock support or facing a terminal illness. The lower rate offers £72.65 weekly, or £3,778 yearly.
From April 2026, rates will rise: the lower tier to £76.70 per week (£3,988 annually) and the higher to £114.60 per week (£5,959 annually). These adjustments aim to keep pace with living costs and support financial stability for recipients.
Examples of Eligible Support Needs
Common scenarios include:
- Arthritis limiting mobility, requiring aid with bed transfers, washing, dressing, and chair use.
- Deafness necessitating an interpreter for communication and public announcements without sign language.
- Mental health conditions demanding prompts for self-care, medication adherence, meals, hygiene, and dressing.
- Visual impairment calling for assistance in clothing selection, safe oven operation, and meal preparation.
- Learning difficulties involving help with finances, correspondence, health monitoring, and personal hygiene.
Supervision to prevent harm, such as for those at risk of falls or confusion, also qualifies. Officials emphasize that early claims can unlock this non-means-tested support, helping cover care costs without impacting other benefits.
