‘Cat Bin Lady’ Reflects on Infamous Incident and Lasting Notoriety
Sixteen years after a viral video captured her placing a cat into a wheelie bin, the woman at the center of the incident states she still does not feel forgiven and has never truly moved past the intense public scrutiny. The event, which occurred in 2010, irrevocably altered her life.
At the time, Mary Bale, then a 45-year-old bank worker, was filmed on CCTV walking down a street. She paused to stroke a nearby cat before looking around and then swiftly placing the animal inside a nearby wheelie bin. The cat, identified as Lola, was reportedly unharmed by the ordeal and lived until the age of 16, passing away approximately five years ago.
A Life in Reclusion
Globally known as the ‘Cat Bin Lady,’ Ms. Bale is now described as living a reclusive life in suburban Coventry. Some of her neighbors remain unaware of her past notoriety, while others recall the intense backlash she faced.
One anonymous neighbor, who has known Ms. Bale over the years, stated, “She was vilified by people across the world. Most people have long forgotten it but not everyone and she doesn’t feel forgiven.” This source added that Ms. Bale resigned from her job and “never reestablished a proper career.” The neighbor continued, “She leads a very, very quiet life now and rarely speaks to anyone. I think she remains deeply embarrassed and thinks that’s all she will ever be known for.”
Another neighbor, Diana, who is a pet owner, commented that the incident had “plagued” Ms. Bale, and she had “never been able to live down the shame.” Diana expressed sympathy, noting that Ms. Bale “at times she struggles.”
Context and Court Proceedings
A further neighbor recalled that Ms. Bale’s father passed away around the time of the public outcry. “Obviously it was a weird thing for her to do but when learned that her father was dying at the time – he passed just a few months later – it was clear she was not in a good place at the time she did it. Those of us who know about her are broadly sympathetic,” the neighbor said.
Ms. Bale was fined £250 at Coventry Magistrates’ Court in 2021. She was also ordered to pay £1,171 in costs to the RSPCA after pleading guilty to causing unnecessary suffering. At the time, Ms. Bale expressed that she did “not deserve to be hated” for her actions, questioning the intense public reaction and stating, “It’s just a cat.”
Ms. Bale’s Account of the Incident
Explaining her actions, Ms. Bale recounted walking home from work and encountering the friendly cat. “I was playing with it, stroking it and listening to it purr as it stood on a garden wall. It was very friendly. I don’t know what came over me, but I suddenly thought it would be funny to put it in the wheelie bin, which was right beside me. I did it as a joke because I thought it would be funny. I never thought it would be trapped. I expected it to wriggle out of the bin,” she stated.
She admitted that she “shouldn’t have done it” but maintained that it was “just a cat at the end of the day” and she did not deserve the global condemnation. She described her actions as a “split second of madness.”
Public Fury and Apologies
The public’s anger escalated significantly, leading to the creation of a Facebook group that reportedly called for her death, with some comparing her actions to those of historical figures.
Following the intense backlash, Ms. Bale issued a statement expressing she was “profoundly sorry” for her actions. “I want to take this opportunity to apologise profusely for the upset and distress that my actions have caused. I cannot explain why I did this, it is completely out of character and I certainly did not intend to cause any distress to Lola or her owners. It was a split second of misjudgement that has got completely out of control. I wish to reiterate that I am profoundly sorry for my actions and wish to resolve this matter to everyone’s satisfaction as soon as possible,” she said.
During the court proceedings, Ms. Bale’s defense solicitor informed the court that the impulsive act occurred while her father was gravely ill, a fact that emerged between the incident and the trial. Ms. Bale received a five-year ban from owning or keeping animals, in addition to the fine.
Forgiveness and Continued Seclusion
After enduring widespread abuse and threats, Ms. Bale retreated into a more private existence. Lola’s owners, Darryl and Stephanie, reportedly live nearby and are understood to have forgiven Ms. Bale. It is believed she has not acquired any new pets since the incident.
