Former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns prepares to part with his coastal dream property in Merewether, a premium beach suburb just 3 km from Newcastle’s CBD. The 968-square-meter vacant lot, perched on high ground in a secluded cul-de-sac, offers breathtaking ocean views of Merewether Beach and carries a $2.7 million to $3 million price guide.
Property Transformation and Recent Sales
Johns, 47, demolished his original five-bedroom home in 2025 to unlock the site’s full potential. He had purchased the property in 2000 for $1.4 million. After clearing the site and subdividing it into two lots, he sold one block last August for $3.2 million after only 24 days on the market.
A neighboring four-bedroom home fetched $3.7 million in July 2025, highlighting the area’s strong demand. Johns also sold a nearby investment property in 2024 for $2.75 million, down from a $3 million listing. He originally bought that four-bedroom, two-bathroom home at age 17 for $360,000 in 1996. Records show he retains two other investment properties in Newcastle.
Johns’ Statement on the Sale
Johns described the decision in a statement: “This place has been a huge part of my life and creativity, but it’s time for something new that reflects where I’m at now and what’s next.” He has not shared further details on social media about the sale.
Recent Hiatus and Career Background
Last year, Johns announced a social media hiatus around his birthday, posting a reflective message hinting at solitude for a new art project. “As an artist, you never know what time it is. It’s an ongoing quest to interpret happiness and sadness with a sprinkling of absurdity. It’s drama. It’s comedy. It’s poetry. It’s a song. It’s cinema,” he wrote. “Everything is beautiful if you let it be.” He added, “I have to go back in time to finalise something and as a result I won’t be on socials… All is love.”
The rock star has maintained a low profile in recent years following legal and substance abuse challenges. Silverchair skyrocketed to fame as teenagers with their 1995 debut album Frogstomp, before disbanding in 2011. Bandmates noted they had drifted apart since the split.
