Brisbane Broncos winger Deine Mariner underwent emergency surgery in Sydney early Sunday morning to save his leg following the team’s narrow defeat to the Sydney Roosters on Saturday. The 23-year-old Samoa international suffered a corked right quadriceps in the first half at Allianz Stadium but returned for the final 15 minutes after teammate Josiah Karapani sustained an ankle injury.
The Injury Develops into Compartment Syndrome
Mariner later developed acute compartment syndrome, prompting an ambulance transfer to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for urgent operation. Broncos chief medical officer Matt Hislop detailed the post-match ordeal on Monday, noting the winger’s quad had swollen significantly by the time the team reached their Sydney hotel just before midnight. Initially cleared to eat dinner and rest, Mariner’s condition worsened rapidly.
“I was called to see Deine at 1:30am, and it was obvious that his thigh had deteriorated,” Hislop stated. “He was in significant pain, and the thigh was very firm. We performed an ultrasound in the hope of draining a hematoma, but the swelling was diffused within the muscle, and there was nothing to drain.”
With nerves and arteries still functioning, medical staff identified acute compartment syndrome and called an ambulance. Paramedics administered pain relief before transferring Mariner to the hospital’s emergency department, where elevated muscle pressure necessitated limb-saving surgery in the early hours of Sunday.
Heroic Return Amid Comeback Attempt
Mariner resumed play with 15 minutes left as the Broncos mounted a comeback from a 30-0 deficit, ultimately losing 38-24. Brisbane coach Michael Maguire commented post-game that Mariner probably should not have returned “but that’s what they’re doing for each other.”
Hislop confirmed Mariner received assessment, strapping, and padding before proving he could run and rejoining the match. “The length of recovery will be determined as the swelling in the muscle resolves,” Hislop added, emphasizing how quickly such rare injuries can escalate.
