Fatal Collision: Driver Sentenced After Speeding Kills Teen

A driver has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for causing the death of a 15-year-old e-scooter rider by dangerous driving. Cameron Langley-McColm was traveling at speeds exceeding 80mph moments before the fatal collision that tragically threw the teenager 90 feet.

Details of the Incident

On the evening of July 8, 2023, Langley-McColm was operating a white BMW Sport on Heath Road in Coxheath, Kent. The vehicle struck Kieran Aaron Byrne, who was riding an e-scooter. Authorities confirmed that Kieran was propelled approximately 28 meters from the point of impact.

Emergency services, including paramedics, attended the scene. Despite their efforts, Kieran was pronounced dead at the location. A second boy, aged 14 at the time, was also struck by the speeding car but sustained no serious injuries.

Investigation Reveals Dangerous Driving

Initial roadside tests for intoxication and drug use conducted on Langley-McColm yielded negative results, and he was released under investigation. However, during a voluntary interview on July 16, 2023, Langley-McColm claimed that Kieran had swerved in front of his car as he attempted to overtake. This assertion was later disproven by a thorough police investigation.

Investigators from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit utilized CCTV footage and witness statements to reconstruct the events. Analysis indicated that Langley-McColm was traveling at nearly three times the speed limit of 30mph on the road and was on the wrong side of the road at the time of the collision.

Crucially, the investigation established that Kieran and the second boy had been riding on the right-hand side of the road prior to the incident and had not maneuvered in front of the oncoming vehicle as Langley-McColm had alleged. This evidence contradicted his account and proved his claims to be false.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

On January 13 of this year, Langley-McColm, residing on Coombe Road in Maidstone, was formally charged with causing death by dangerous driving. He was subsequently sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court to a prison term of seven years and six months. In addition to his custodial sentence, he has been handed an 11-year driving ban.

Statement from Law Enforcement

Detective Constable David Holmes, a member of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, described the incident as “tragic and completely avoidable.” He stated, “Cameron Langley-McColm was driving at more than 82mph in a 30mph zone and had no consideration for other road users. His actions were reckless and unnecessary.”

“As a result, a young boy lost his life and a family has been left devastated,” DC Holmes continued. “Driving at speed increases the risk of death or serious injury, and we will continue to crack down on motorists who endanger others.”

Tributes to the Victim

Kieran Aaron Byrne, aged 15, was remembered by his family as a “beautiful” and “talented” schoolboy. In the days following his death, his sister-in-law, Rachel Byrne, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media.

She wrote, “On July 8, my beautiful, talented, hilariously sarcastic, clever, highly intelligent and funny 15-year-old brother-in-law passed away in an unfortunate road traffic accident. We have had the most horrific 48 hours that no family should ever have to deal with.”

Rachel urged for remembrance of the profound loss experienced by Kieran’s family, stating, “last night my mother in-law lost her baby boy, as did his father, my husband lost his baby brother, my brother in-law lost his little brother and best friend, my step children lost their uncle and best friend.”

She concluded her message by expressing the family’s unity and gratitude for the support received: “We as a family unite and are strong and will stick together whilst we deal with this tragic turn of events. We thank you for all your flowers and love we have received, you do not understand how it has helped us. Kieran Aaron Byrne we will miss you and love you always. Fly high our angel.”

The collision occurred on Heath Road towards Coxheath, near Maidstone, Kent, around 10pm on Saturday, July 8. The road remained closed for over 10 hours as crash investigators meticulously examined the scene.
