Tuchel Praises England’s ‘Heroic’ Win Over Mexico at Azteca

Published on

Thomas Tuchel lauded England’s “heroic” performance following their dramatic 3-2 World Cup victory against Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium. Playing with 10 men for nearly 50 minutes, England secured a monumental win on foreign soil, overcoming altitude, a hostile crowd, and a delayed kickoff to advance to the quarter-finals.

England’s Resilience Shines Through in Thrilling Victory

The Three Lions delivered one of their most memorable World Cup displays, with Jude Bellingham scoring twice and Harry Kane converting a crucial penalty. Despite the second-half dismissal of Jarell Quansah and an astonishing 11 minutes of added time, England held firm against a determined Mexican side. The win sets up a quarter-final clash with Erling Haaland’s Norway in Miami.

An elated but visibly tired Tuchel described the feeling post-match as akin to winning a final. “This last moment where the referee takes the whistle to his mouth – when you know that you overcame 50 minutes with 10 men in the altitude against the home country, against a strong, strong Mexican team – this is a moment of joy,” he stated. “It’s a heroic performance and a heroic result. I’m so happy for the players. We found a way to win and we did it with pure mentality and heart, overcoming every obstacle thrown at us.”

Tuchel emphasized the emotional connection forged between the players and the nation through such a demanding performance. “They’re exhausted on the next level, which is beautiful to see, because I think this gives a connection with the fans,” he observed. “They see at the whistle that they’re almost too exhausted to celebrate, and this is just beautiful. Players that just give everything for the win and for the country and for that shirt. And just, just everyone keep that in mind, this is a special moment.”

Bellingham Stars, Kane Seals Victory Amidst Drama

Jude Bellingham opened the scoring with a header in the 36th minute and doubled England’s lead just 98 seconds later, capitalizing on a pass from Harry Kane. Mexico pulled one back before halftime through Julian Quinones. The match took a significant turn in the second half when Jarell Quansah received a straight red card for a challenge in the 54th minute.

Despite being a man down, England extended their lead to 3-1 when Harry Kane converted a penalty in the 60th minute. However, Mexico, spurred on by the home crowd, narrowed the deficit again when Raul Jimenez scored from the penalty spot after Kane conceded a foul in the 79th minute. England then had to defend resolutely for the remaining time, weathering intense pressure to secure the victory.

Tuchel Criticizes Officiating Standards

While celebrating the hard-fought win, Tuchel did not hold back in his criticism of the officiating. “Not good enough,” he told reporters when asked about the refereeing. “Referees are just not good enough. Fourth officials are just not good enough. That is the bottom line.” He specifically questioned VAR decisions, noting the perceived lack of clear and obvious error in overturning decisions that went against England.

Tuchel also addressed a lighthearted moment involving Harry Kane and a request to intervene regarding Quansah’s ban, referencing a previous instance where a US president reportedly influenced a suspension. “That’s not a bad place to start,” the German manager joked when asked if Kane might contact Donald Trump to appeal Quansah’s ban, drawing a parallel to a similar situation involving Folarin Balogun.

Kane Reflects on a ‘Crazy Game’

Harry Kane, substituted in the final minutes, struggled to articulate the intensity of the match. “It was a crazy game,” he said, breathless. “We had to fight and we had to find something. I’ve just been singing, I can’t really talk. The occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way.”

Injury Concerns and Future Focus

Amidst the jubilation, there was concern for Jordan Henderson, who sustained a wrist injury after celebrating by vaulting an advertising board. “I am also sad because Jordan is injured,” Tuchel confirmed. “It’s quite a serious injury with his wrist. The doctor told us he is in hospital.”

Looking ahead, Tuchel expressed a desire for a brief respite before focusing on the next challenge against Norway. “I will not talk about the semi-final, my friend,” he stated when asked about a potential matchup with Argentina. “Now, we have the chance for some days off and I tell you something: I will not re-watch our match, and I will not watch anything about Norway in the next 24 hours. I will do one full day without football. And then we will think about Norway. We’ll take it step-by-step.”

Respect for Opponents

Despite the victory, Tuchel extended his respect to the defeated Mexican team and their passionate supporters. “I almost should say sorry that you’re out, because I saw the passion and emotion of all the people on the side of the streets today and yesterday, and from the bus,” he commented. “But I’m incredibly proud of my team and our achievements.” The sentiment was echoed by a nation captivated by England’s remarkable resilience and triumph.
