Two Men Charged in Theft of England’s World Cup Gear

Two individuals have been formally charged in connection with the disappearance of approximately £13,000 worth of England’s World Cup kit. The stolen items, which included football apparel, accessories, and even a Lego set and two toy lions, vanished as the national team arrived to commence their tournament campaign.

The accused, identified as Mustafa Salik and Erfan Kamal, are believed to have origins in Afghanistan. They face charges of receiving stolen property. If convicted, they could face a maximum of seven years in prison.

Details of the Stolen Items Emerge

Official documents from the Jackson County prosecutor’s office in Kansas City, Missouri, have detailed the specific items that were taken. The inventory includes football shirts, boots, a Lego replica of a Nike Air shoe, a pair of goalkeeper gloves, and a football. Two toy lions were also recovered, though it remains unclear if one of these was the team’s mascot, Leo the Lion.

Prosecution documents indicate that the theft occurred in a different jurisdiction. The two men were allegedly found in possession of the stolen goods after England’s backroom staff discovered the items missing. The incident reportedly took place while kit vans were being unloaded at England’s state-of-the-art $20 million training facility, Scope Soccer Village, in Kansas City.

FA officials realized the items were gone after some packages disappeared from a trailer while it was being transported overland from Palm Beach, Florida, to Kansas City. Upon questioning by team staff, one of the individuals initially resisted an inspection of the vehicle’s cab but complied when informed that police would be called. He is said to have then produced a pair of shoes.

Recovered Goods and Investigation

The remaining items were reportedly returned by the men. A detailed inventory of the recovered stolen goods includes four pairs of cleats valued at £250 each, five pairs of shoes worth £170 each, and a red England jersey costing £3,730. Additionally, two white England tops, each valued at £3,730, a football priced at £160, and a pair of goalkeeper gloves costing £120 were also accounted for.

Other items recovered include four pairs of navy shorts, four navy shirts, and four light blue long-sleeved shirts, as well as four light blue short-sleeved shirts, all of an unspecified value. A multifunctional power strip for £30, a JBL speaker valued at £112, and the £75 Lego set were also found.

After returning the items, the men departed. However, Kansas City police were subsequently alerted, and an investigation was launched. Court documents reveal that the men, who were employed by a firm named Vista Trans, allegedly claimed they had received permission to take the items. They reportedly stopped in Columbia, a town approximately 150 miles from Kansas City, and took the merchandise.

The men were apprehended at their residences in San Antonio, Texas, situated about 800 miles from Kansas City. They are currently being held in jail on a $75,000 bond, with a trial date yet to be scheduled.

Official Statements and Team Response

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson commented on the incident, stating, “I think I did. I think I did but I got them back, so it’s all good, we got everything back, so it’s all good.” He added with a smile, “Leo the lion was saved, he comes everywhere with us.”

Jackson County prosecutor Melesa Johnson issued a statement, affirming, “Jackson County will not tolerate any criminal activity that targets World Cup visitors, including the international teams that have travelled here to compete. We thank the Kansas City Police Department and our on-call attorneys for their quick work investigating this incident and filing charges immediately. Our office is committed to holding these individuals accountable.”

Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas expressed his gratitude on social media, stating, “I am grateful for the quick work of the Kansas City Police Department and the Prosecutor’s Office in resolving an investigation across several states, helping crime victims recover goods stolen in transit, and ensuring the accused will face prosecution. Kansas City’s public safety leadership will continue to ensure all are safe and offenders will be held accountable swiftly for any misconduct.”

Officials from the Football Association have downplayed the incident, asserting it would “have no impact” on the team’s schedule, and are focusing on their upcoming opening group game against Croatia in Dallas.

Severe Weather Hits Kansas City

Meanwhile, the England team was forced to take shelter at their hotel, the Inn on Meadowbrook, following a series of violent thunderstorms and a tornado that battered Kansas City late Saturday night. Winds reaching up to 80 mph swept through the city’s suburbs, with reports of a tornado, downed trees, and power lines. Many television stations interrupted coverage of Scotland’s match against Haiti to report on the severe weather.

Residents were advised to seek immediate shelter. The powerful thunderstorms occurred just hours after England’s first World Cup training session concluded. The squad, along with millions of others in Missouri, received mobile alerts warning of a severe thunderstorm with destructive 80 mph winds, advising them to take shelter in a sturdy building away from windows due to the potential for deadly flying debris.

The Inn at Meadowbrook, where the team is staying, is believed to have storm shelters, though it is not confirmed if the team utilized them. Power outages were reported across the city as the storms raged. Forecasters had predicted the severe weather, warning of strong winds, large hail, and heavy rain.

Wailing sirens echoed through Kansas City as an eerie atmosphere descended, prompting people to seek refuge in bars and restaurants. Forked lightning illuminated the sky for over an hour, accompanied by continuous thunder before the storm subsided. As a precaution, the Fan Zone near Union Street station, which had hosted over 25,000 people for a previous match, closed early. At the peak of the storm, 66,000 people were without power, and a confirmed tornado touched down in Clay County, north of Kansas City. Weather experts urged people to “hide in a closet or in the bath” to avoid injury. Numerous trees and power lines were reported to have fallen.
