Gary Numan: AI Songs from 1979 Now Haunt Reality

Published on

Gary Numan, the 68-year-old electronic music pioneer active since 1976, shows no signs of slowing down. Speaking from Palm Springs, he anticipates a music-filled weekend at Coachella alongside daughters Persia and Raven, who pursue music careers. Following his third tour in seven months, Numan admits exhaustion with live bands and large crowds.

Personal Trials Shape His Art

The past six months brought profound challenges. In November, just before a show, Numan learned of his brother’s death. In January, his wife experienced a mini-stroke, revealing a hole in her heart. After surgeries, she has largely recovered but remains paralyzed in one arm. Fans may hear echoes of these events in future releases.

Life experiences fuel Numan’s songwriting. “A lot of [my music] comes from life,” he states. “They are very connected.” Past grief, such as losing a child or beloved dogs, inspired tracks. Yet, some traumas prove too deep: he tried writing about his grandparents’ deaths but produced nothing worthy. “When my mum died, who I loved very much, there’s nothing,” he reflects. “I suffer from a lack of confidence.”

Prophetic Warnings on AI

Numan often explores humanity’s future trajectory. His 1979 album Replicas delved into artificial intelligence. “What would happen if a machine took over?” he questions. “How would it view humanity? Would it see us as an ally or an irrelevant nuisance? It would find clever ways to get rid of us without us knowing.” He notes with a laugh that these concepts “have actually come true in a way.”

Exciting 2026 UK Shows

Numan returns to UK stages this summer: Halifax Piece Hall on July 31 and London’s Crystal Palace Bowl on August 6. The London gig resonates deeply for the Hammersmith native. “My local gig used to be the Hammersmith Odeon,” he recalls. “Before success in the ’70s, we’d drive past and say, ‘One day, we’ll be there.'” Now, he headlines a 15,000-capacity venue.

Setlists reflect his preferences. “I’m pretty selfish with it,” he admits. “I want to look down and think, ‘Oh, great, I love this.'” Classics like ‘Metal,’ ‘Films,’ and ‘Cars’ receive heavier, modernized treatments rather than note-for-note renditions. By tour dates, Numan plans months of progress on new material in the studio.
