Greater Manchester Police Enhance Road Safety with New Speed Cameras

Drivers in Greater Manchester are being put on notice as local authorities significantly upgrade their capabilities to combat speeding. The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have introduced two new speed enforcement vehicles, aiming to enhance their capacity to address dangerous and excessive speeding across the region.

Increased Visibility and Targeted Enforcement

These new vehicles are designed to provide a more extensive and visible enforcement presence throughout all ten districts of the city. A key focus will be on locations identified through community concerns and data analysis as persistent risk areas for speeding. GMP officials have stated that this development is a crucial step forward for the Vision Zero strategy, a commitment to eradicate all road fatalities and life-altering injuries on Manchester’s roads.

Expert Insights on Enhanced Capacity

Michael Hewitt, Camera Enforcement Team Leader, commented on the strategic importance of the new fleet. “These additional vehicles represent a significant enhancement to our operational capacity,” Hewitt stated. “Increasing our fleet to five dedicated enforcement vehicles means we can be present in more locations, more often, targeting those areas where speeding presents the greatest danger to our communities. Visible enforcement remains a key part of changing driver behaviours and supporting Greater Manchester’s Vision Zero objectives.”

Visible Deterrents on the Road

Images released by GMP indicate that the new vans are clearly marked as speed enforcement vehicles. They are expected to feature prominent messaging such as ‘watch your speed,’ accompanied by a speed camera logo, serving as a visible deterrent to motorists.

Speeding: A Major Road Safety Concern

GMP has identified speeding as one of the “fatal four” contributing factors most frequently associated with fatalities and serious injuries on Manchester’s streets. Drivers apprehended for speeding typically face a £100 fine and up to three penalty points on their driving licence. However, more severe cases can result in significantly higher fines, potentially reaching £1,000 or even £2,500 for motorway offenses. Accumulating 12 penalty points on a driving licence can lead to a temporary driving ban.

Vision Zero Ambitions for a Safer Future

Peter Boulton, TfGM’s Network Director for Highways, emphasized the critical role of speed reduction in achieving road safety goals. “Speeding is one of the leading causes of fatal and life-changing injuries across the UK, and the difference of a few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death,” Boulton explained. “In Greater Manchester we want to reduce all road casualties to zero by 2040 as part of our Vision Zero approach. These new speed enforcement vehicles will provide a visible deterrent to discourage dangerous driving behaviour, supporting GMP’s crucial role in helping us realise our Vision Zero ambition.”
