Lindsey Vonn Shines at US Open Post-Injury Comeback

Published on

Lindsey Vonn made a striking return to the public eye at the US Open on Sunday, approximately six months after a severe skiing accident that doctors feared could result in the loss of her leg. The celebrated Olympic champion, aged 41, graced the blue carpet at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on August 30, joining a host of stars for the tournament’s opening day. Vonn captivated onlookers in a vibrant lime-green, floor-length gown that accentuated her athletic physique, transitioning to a darker ombré hem. The sleeveless, high-neck design featured elegant draped detailing around the hips. She complemented her outfit with a small snakeskin-print clutch and a gold wristwatch. Her long blonde hair was styled in a relaxed half-up, half-down manner, with soft strands framing her face, paired with subtle makeup that highlighted her radiant complexion.

A Difficult Road to Recovery

This public appearance marks a significant milestone, especially considering the intense physical challenges Vonn has faced since February. Her journey back into the spotlight follows a harrowing crash during the women’s downhill event at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics on February 8. Vonn had entered the Games as a prominent comeback story, returning to competitive skiing years after her initial retirement in 2019, which followed a partial knee replacement. However, her Olympic dreams took a severe turn when she crashed at high speed on the Olimpia delle Tofane course in Cortina, sustaining a complex fracture in her left leg.

Reflecting on the incident, Vonn shared with Vanity Fair, “I was number one in the world, and potentially on my way to an Olympic medal. Now I’m in a wheelchair.” The gravity of her injuries was profound. She later disclosed that medical professionals had serious concerns about saving her leg, and by May, she had undergone a total of eight surgeries. Shortly after the accident, Vonn described the anticipated recovery period as “long, long.”

Signs of Progress and Renewed Strength

In the weeks leading up to her US Open appearance, Vonn shared encouraging updates on her recovery. She posted footage of herself back in the gym, diligently working to regain strength and mobility. In an interview aired on CBS Sunday Morning on August 23, Vonn discussed the remarkable path that led her back to professional skiing in the first place. Initially, her 2024 partial knee replacement was aimed at improving her quality of life, not necessarily a return to elite competition. However, once she could ski again without the chronic pain that had hampered the later stages of her career, her perspective shifted.

“I could do the thing that I loved the most in the world without pain,” Vonn stated. This renewed ability allowed her to once again become a leading downhill racer in her 40s, challenging conventional notions about age and female athletes. She expressed this sentiment to ELLE earlier this year, saying, “I think there’s a perception that when you get to a certain age, you’re supposed to do a certain thing, and this is the way it’s supposed to look. Everyone’s path is different.”

Contemplating Future Comebacks

Remarkably, despite the severity of her Olympic injuries, Lindsey Vonn has not definitively ruled out another competitive return. She has postponed making a final decision about her future in skiing. During a recent appearance on Maria Sharapova’s “Pretty Tough” podcast, Vonn indicated that she plans to evaluate her physical and mental condition next spring before deciding on her next steps. For the present, her primary focus remains on her recovery.

Vonn also spoke candidly about an aspect of elite sport she unexpectedly missed during her initial retirement: the intense focus it provided. She explained that rigorous training offered an escape from the constant distractions of daily life, creating an athlete’s “bubble” where external noise, phones, and emails fade away, allowing for complete concentration. Since stepping away from competition, she has sought to replicate this state of presence through her gym sessions and meditation practices.

Personal Reflections and Future Aspirations

Beyond her athletic career, Vonn has also been re-evaluating other significant areas of her life. Prior to the Olympics, she openly discussed her thoughts on relationships and her desire to become a mother. Vonn revealed that she has undergone egg freezing and remains hopeful about starting a family, while acknowledging that her future family structure might differ from her original expectations.

“I hope I can find someone that I can have a family with,” she told ELLE. “But I also know I can do it on my own if I need to.” Vonn shared that therapy following her first retirement was instrumental in helping her understand her personal desires and needs outside of the identity that had defined her since childhood. “When I retired, I needed to work on myself to figure out what I wanted in my life,” she explained, posing questions to herself such as, “What are the things that I need as a person? That I need in a relationship?” Her journey reflects a broader personal growth, moving beyond her athletic persona to define a fulfilling future.
