Manchester United Preparing Bid for Highly-Rated Midfielder
Manchester United is reportedly on the verge of submitting a formal offer for West Ham’s promising midfielder, Mateus Fernandes. Sources indicate that the Premier League club has already engaged in preliminary discussions regarding a potential summer transfer for the 21-year-old talent.
Fernandes, who arrived at West Ham last summer from Southampton for an initial fee of £38 million, plus potential add-ons totaling £4 million, has garnered significant attention from top clubs. Following West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League last season, the young midfielder emerged as one of their standout performers, attracting interest from Arsenal, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Club Demands Steep Transfer Fee
West Ham is understood to be holding firm on their valuation of Fernandes, seeking a substantial £80 million transfer fee. Despite the significant asking price, reports suggest that Manchester United has moved ahead of rivals Arsenal in their pursuit of the player. The Premier League champions are reportedly hesitant to meet West Ham’s ambitious valuation, potentially creating an opening for United.
Club Captain Endorses Transfer
Adding weight to Manchester United’s pursuit, club captain Bruno Fernandes is said to be in favor of the move to acquire his compatriot. It is understood that Bruno Fernandes has spoken highly of Mateus Fernandes, endorsing the club’s efforts to secure his signature.
Midfielder Reflects on Bruno’s Influence
In previous statements made in March, Mateus Fernandes himself acknowledged the significant impact Bruno Fernandes has had on his career. When discussing his midfield role models, Mateus Fernandes remarked, “Perhaps the biggest reference is Bruno because of the player he is. It’s not just now, back in my Sporting days he was someone I looked up to and tried to learn from.” He further elaborated on Bruno’s influence, stating, “He plays in the same league as me. He’s currently one of the players with the most international caps for the national team, with a lot of experience, also at the Premier League level. So, I look up to him a lot.” He also noted that other national team midfielders are examples, but Bruno “stands out among the midfielders here.”
Competition from European Giants
Manchester United faces stiff competition for Fernandes’ signature. reports Spain indicate that Real Madrid, under new head coach Jose Mourinho, is actively working on a deal to sign the midfielder, with Mourinho reportedly prioritizing the acquisition.
Furthermore, Paris Saint-Germain is also rumored to have been in discussions with West Ham regarding a potential double transfer, which could include Fernandes and Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville.
