Carolina Flores Gomez, a 27-year-old former beauty queen, was discovered deceased in her upscale apartment in Mexico City’s Polanco neighborhood last Thursday with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Details of the Incident
Authorities believe the shooting occurred on April 15, 2029, but it was not reported until the following day, April 16. Gomez, who won the Miss Teen Universe title in Baja California in 2017, shared the luxury home with her husband, Alejandro Gomez, and his mother, Erika Maria, at the time of the incident.
No gunshots or signs of foul play were reported by neighbors in the apartment complex. Investigators continue to collect evidence from the scene for forensic analysis.
Ongoing Investigation
The Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office classifies the case as an intentional homicide. Focus has turned to Gomez’s mother-in-law as part of the probe, though no arrests have occurred.
Born on April 4, 1999, in Ensenada, Gomez had recently marked her 27th birthday.
Official Statements
Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Avila emphasized the case’s urgency, stating to reporters, “No crime against a woman should go unpunished.” She added, “Our thoughts are with her family during this devastating time.”
State prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez confirmed close coordination among officials to advance the investigation swiftly.
Call for Femicide Classification
Amid rising concerns over violence against women in Mexico, civil organizations urge reclassification of the death as femicide. UN Women defines femicide as “an intentional killing with a gender-related motivation,” distinct from general homicide.
The agency explains that femicide stems from discrimination against women, unequal power dynamics, gender stereotypes, and harmful norms. It represents the most severe form of gender-based violence, encompassing intimate partner abuse, sexual harassment, trafficking, and other harms across homes, workplaces, schools, public spaces, and online environments.
