True Story of Millionaire Cheating Scandal Comes to Streaming

A dramatic three-part series chronicling one of Britain’s most astonishing television scandals has arrived on Netflix. The streaming platform recently added the critically acclaimed production featuring an ensemble of renowned British actors.

Behind the Million-Pound Deception

Titled Quiz, the series dramatizes the remarkable true story of Charles Ingram, a former British Army major who won £1 million on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2001. The program meticulously examines how Ingram and his wife Diana faced criminal prosecution after producers alleged they orchestrated an elaborate cheating scheme involving strategic coughing from an accomplice in the audience.

Award-Winning Cast Brings Scandal to Life

Matthew Macfadyen (Succession, Pride & Prejudice) stars as Charles Ingram, with Sian Clifford (Fleabag) portraying his wife Diana. Michael Sheen delivers a standout performance as original quizmaster Chris Tarrant, complete with signature bleached hair and uncanny vocal mannerisms. The supporting cast includes Mark Bonnar, the late Helen McCrory, and comedian Aisling Bea.

Critical Reception and Audience Response

Since its original UK broadcast, the series has generated significant discussion about the blurred lines between entertainment and reality. Viewers familiar with the scandal have praised the production’s nuanced approach to the controversial events.

“This three-part series came as a total surprise,” remarked one audience member. “While dramatized, it compellingly examines the origins of the cheating allegations and their legal aftermath. You don’t need to be familiar with the quiz show to appreciate this quality drama.”

Another viewer highlighted the performances: “Macfadyen and Clifford perfectly captured the Ingrams’ complexity. Sheen’s transformation into Tarrant deserves particular recognition for its attention to detail.”

Streaming Platform’s British Content Strategy

The addition aligns with Netflix’s ongoing expansion of its British programming catalog, following recent successes with other UK-produced series. The platform continues to acquire acclaimed productions that may have originally garnered limited international exposure.

All three episodes of Quiz, adapted from Bob Woffinden and James Plaskett’s book Bad Show: the Quiz, the Cough, the Millionaire Major, are currently available for streaming worldwide.
