Moorland Engulfed by Flames as Temperatures Shatter June Records
A significant wildfire has erupted in the Peak District, adding to the extreme conditions of an unprecedented heatwave gripping Britain, which has now recorded its hottest June day on record.
Images emerging from Glossop, Derbyshire, near Wood Head Reservoir, depict towering flames and dense plumes of smoke consuming the moorland. The intense heat has fueled the blaze, creating a dramatic scene in the picturesque landscape.
Extreme Heat Continues with Red Weather Warning Extended
The national meteorological service confirmed that temperatures reached a scorching 36.7C (98.1F) this afternoon. This follows yesterday’s record-breaking high of 36.1C (97F) in Gosport, Hampshire, surpassing the previous record set in 1976.
Forecasters predict a further rise in temperatures, with highs of up to 38C (100.4F) expected tomorrow. Large areas of England and Wales remain under a rare red warning for extreme heat, signaling a significant risk to health and infrastructure.
Emergency Services Respond to Wildfire
Firefighting services are actively engaged in combating the wildfire. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue stated, “We are currently assisting Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service at a fire on the moorland in Glossop, close to neighbouring Tameside.”
Authorities have issued advisories for nearby residents due to the substantial smoke plume. “Due to the large smoke plume, nearby residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed,” the spokesperson added, emphasizing the need for public safety measures.
A helicopter was observed flying above the wildfire, monitoring the extent of the blaze as it spread near forested areas.
