Perez Hilton faced a life-threatening health crisis last month while preparing to celebrate his birthday, emerging from a 21-day hospital stay after battling sepsis triggered by flu medication taken on an empty stomach.
Hospital Battle and Surgeries
At Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, Hilton underwent two surgeries to address multiple complications, including fluid in his lungs, deep vein thrombosis, kidney issues, and arrhythmia. He shared images from his hospital bed, connected to tubes and receiving supplemental oxygen.
During the ordeal, Hilton experienced several moments when he believed death was imminent, particularly after developing a secondary infection upon admission for sepsis and later suffering atrial fibrillation along with pleural effusions.
‘I thought I was gonna die,’ Hilton recalled of one late-night episode when his heart rhythm faltered and his mother had visited daily. Despite outward calm, he felt inner panic as his condition deteriorated.
Profound Divine Intervention
Hilton attributes his recovery to a miraculous divine encounter. ‘It was God presenting Himself to me, and then doing something that I could only describe as a miracle to heal me,’ he stated. This ‘very profound, very real experience’ occurred while he remained unwell, marking a turning point.
‘What was so powerful for me was that it wasn’t just God manifesting Himself. It was the one-two punch. It was God manifesting Himself and then healing me also,’ Hilton explained.
Raised Catholic in a Cuban family in Miami, Hilton now identifies as ‘Catholic-ish’ due to past disagreements with the church. He keeps the specifics of his interaction with God private, saying, ‘Some things should be kept private, and what happened with me and God was so real, so powerful, and so personal, that I want to keep it between me and God.’
Since sharing his story, religious celebrities like Nicole Scherzinger, Kristin Chenoweth, and Candace Cameron Bure have offered warm support. Bure, whom he calls an ‘angel,’ has discussed his experience privately with him.
Career Reflection and New Perspective
The 48-year-old father of three, known for his early 2000s rise as a celebrity gossip blogger, views the encounter as transformative. It allowed him to forgive past mistakes, including outing gay celebrities and assigning derogatory nicknames to stars.
‘I made a lot of mistakes in the past which are very public. Which I own. Which I regret, which I have deep shame for, which I’ve apologized for repeatedly, publicly as well as privately,’ Hilton admitted.
He compared his former behavior to addiction: ‘It’s like if you’re a drug addict, and you’re stealing from your parents’ money to buy drugs. You know what you’re doing is wrong, and you don’t care. You just want that hit. And that was truly what I was doing.’ The ‘most powerful drug’ was the attention he craved, regardless of harm caused.
‘To have this experience with God and to know that God loves me, and God forgives me, it was very healing, because I then forgave myself,’ he said.
While recommitted to daily prayers and experiencing ‘happy tears,’ Hilton plans no career change. ‘No, because I’m not doing gossip. I do celebrity journalism,’ he clarifies. He now pursues a ‘smaller, quieter, happier life,’ ignoring nasty social media comments by blocking them instantly.
‘Prior to my hospitalization, I used to think all attention was good attention,’ Hilton reflected. ‘I am more interested in protecting my peace.’
