Drivers who complete pre-17 driving lessons face an 84 percent lower risk of accidents during the vital first six months after passing their test, according to recent research.
Key Findings from Pupil Survey
A survey of 450 pupils tracked their safety records post-test. Only 3.3 percent of those with extra training from ages nine to 17 experienced accidents, far below the national average of 20 percent.
Young Driver, the UK’s leading pre-17 driving school with 1.6 million lessons delivered nationwide, conducted the study. It coincides with the opening of their first London venue at Wembley Park.
New London Training Facility
The Wembley Park site features the Pink Car Park, equipped with simulated road systems including roundabouts and parking areas. Young drivers practice gear shifting, steering, and braking in dual-controlled cars under qualified instructors, mirroring real-road conditions at age 17.
Expert Insights on Long-Term Training
Ian Mulingani, managing director of Young Driver, stated: “Training drivers over a longer period builds a solid understanding of car handling before they encounter real roads. This approach fosters safer drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. The lessons also provide fun and a major confidence boost for teens and pre-teens, who approach the responsibility with seriousness. Parents often express surprise when their child masters reverse parking after the first session.”
Program Details and Expansion
Launched in 2009 to promote safer new drivers from age 17, Young Driver now operates over 70 UK venues. Children aged nine and taller than 1.4 meters can drive dual-controlled Suzuki Swifts or similar vehicles on private land designed as realistic roads, complete with signs, junctions, and layouts. Progress tracking occurs via Drive Diaries.
Premium and Specialized Options
For advanced learners, Young Driver Exclusive offers drives in Porsche 911, Mercedes SL500, or Bentley Flying Spur models. Classic cars like the Morris Minor Convertible and Austin Seven are available, alongside an ex-service fire engine. Off-road adventures in the Polaris Youth Ranger suit ages 10 to 14 at select sites, while four- to nine-year-olds can pilot the British-made Firefly Sport EV.
Impressive Pass Rates and Test Prep
The program boasts a 78 percent first-time pass rate among pupils, compared to the national 48 percent—a 62 percent improvement. With average 20-week waits for UK driving tests, early practice maximizes success chances.
Upcoming events at Wembley Park provide further opportunities for young drivers to build skills.
