Major Auto Theft Bust Nets Multiple Arrests
An extensive investigation into a string of vehicle thefts across southwestern Ontario has led to 74 charges against five individuals. The operation, known as Project Steel, was initiated in March after a vehicle was reported stolen from a Milton residence. The stolen vehicle contained the victim’s wallet, and bank cards from it were subsequently used at a fast-food establishment within the Greater Toronto Area.
Investigation Uncovers Fraudulent Activity
Investigators successfully identified several victims and traced their movements to a residence in Brampton. On April 1, law enforcement executed a search warrant at this location, apprehending four suspects. During the search, authorities discovered fraudulent identification from both Ontario and Quebec, alongside specialized equipment. This included devices for reprogramming vehicles, magnetic trackers, cellphones, blank key fobs, tools commonly used for break-ins, clothing believed to have been worn during the thefts, and prescription medication obtained fraudulently.
A fifth suspect was apprehended on June 2. Of the five individuals arrested, four hail from Quebec, and one is from Ontario. Authorities are actively seeking a sixth suspect, also from Quebec, who faces 25 charges.
Allegations of Widespread Criminal Activity
Investigators allege that the group is linked to at least 13 instances of auto theft and attempted auto theft within the Halton Region. An additional theft in the Waterloo Region is also attributed to this network. The five arrested individuals are facing a range of charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, failure to comply with probation orders, identity fraud, and unauthorized use of a credit card.

Sergeant Kevin Magee emphasized the significant impact of organized auto theft on communities. “Organized auto theft is a crime that impacts our community on multiple levels and remains a priority issue for our police service,” Sgt. Magee stated. “Investigations such as Project Steel demonstrate our ongoing commitment to dismantling these criminal networks and protecting our residents. We will continue to leverage every available resource to disrupt criminal activity, identify those responsible, and ensure they are held accountable before the courts.”
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
