The Boston Red Sox have dismissed longtime manager Alex Cora following a dismal start to the MLB season. The team also parts ways with hitting coach Peter Fatse, third-base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramon Vazquez, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson, and major league hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin.
Key Staff Changes
Game-planning coach Jason Varitek, a two-time World Series champion with the Red Sox, transitions to a new role within the organization. Chad Tracy, current manager of Boston’s Triple-A affiliate in Worcester, steps in as interim manager.
Recent Performance
The moves come shortly after the Red Sox crushed the Baltimore Orioles 17-1 on Saturday, ending a four-game skid. Despite the win, the team sits at 10-17, dead last in the AL East, and suffered a three-game sweep at Fenway Park by rivals the New York Yankees.
Cora’s Tenure
Cora, who managed the Red Sox in two stints since 2021, guided the team to a World Series title in 2018. The 50-year-old leaves Fenway with a 619-541 record.
Red Sox owner John Henry issued a statement praising Cora: “Alex Cora led this organization to one of the greatest seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and for that, and the many years that followed, he will always have our deepest gratitude. He has had a lasting impact on this team and on this city. He has led on and off the field in so many important ways. These decisions are never easy, but this one is especially difficult given what Alex has meant to the Red Sox since the day he arrived.”
Henry added: “I want to thank Alex, our coaches, and their families for everything they have given to this organization. They have been part of this club in a way that goes beyond the field, and they will always have our respect and gratitude.”
