Richard Osman, celebrated British TV host and co-creator of the quiz show Pointless, received an OBE from the Princess Royal at Windsor Castle on Tuesday. The honor recognizes his contributions to literature and broadcasting.
He was joined by his wife, actress Ingrid Oliver, and daughter Ruby, 28, in her first public outing with her father. Richard shares Ruby and son Sonny, 26, with his first wife.
Ruby Osman’s Impressive Path
Ruby has forged a distinguished career as a senior geopolitical advisor at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, steering clear of the public eye.
Academic Excellence
At Hills Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge, Ruby excelled with three A*s in maths, French, and history, plus an A in her extended project qualification.
She pursued Chinese studies at Oxford University, including a year at Peking University in Beijing’s Haidian district.
There, she launched the Silk Road Society, a student think tank examining geopolitical and economic aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Richard once shared his initial worries about Ruby studying in China. He recounted a family trip to Shanghai that eased his concerns: “Ruby decided she wanted to study Chinese at university. However, she then decided that she actually wanted to study it in China.” The visit proved memorable, with superb local food and Ruby, at 6ft tall, treated like a “goddess” by locals. She graduated with first-class honors, earning the Gibbs Prize for top achievement in Chinese with a 73 average.
Professional Milestones
After university, Ruby worked two years as a freelance translator at the Central Compilation & Translation Bureau.
She joined the Tony Blair Institute as a researcher six years ago, advancing to senior geopolitical advisor.
In 2024, she joined the advisory board of the British Foreign Policy Group. The next year, she became a non-resident expert at the Oxford China Policy Lab.
Her analysis appears in outlets like BBC, TIME, and Project Syndicate.
Family Privacy
Richard shields his family from publicity, staying silent on his first wife’s identity and their 2007 divorce after marrying in the late 1990s.
“It’s not my story, if you know what I mean. It’s nothing grim; it’s just her privacy,” he stated.
His own absent father inspired his hands-on parenting. Post-divorce, he said: “When my partnership broke up, I did think, ‘Oh God, this is going to be awful.’ I’ve seen my kids nonstop… They know I love them and I tell them nonstop.”
Richard briefly dated jazz singer Sumudu Jayatilaka in 2018 before marrying Ingrid Oliver in December 2022.
