Footy Star Kane Evans Celebrates Mother’s Health Milestone

Rugby league player Kane Evans has shared a heartwarming update regarding his mother Jeannette’s health battle. Evans, who recently made history as the first male rugby league player in 30 years to publicly come out as gay, posted a video on Instagram showing his mother ringing a hospital ‘victory’ bell, signifying the completion of her radiotherapy treatment.

The emotional post captured the significant milestone, with Evans writing, ‘My beautiful mum got to ring the bell today for her radiotherapy treatment being over.’ He reflected on the journey, adding, ‘I find it hard knowing the battle is done but the war may not be over.’ The 34-year-old’s accompanying footage showcased Jeannette ringing the bell and expressing her gratitude to the medical professionals involved.

A Shift in Perspective

Evans shared his evolving perspective on life’s challenges, stating, ‘I used to think life was wins and losses but now I realise it’s lessons and blessings.’ He continued, ‘Everything we go through we learn and each day to go again is a blessing. I love ya mum.’

In the video clip, Jeannette could be heard thanking her care team, saying, ‘Thank you girls, thank you so much. I tell you what, you feel like very old souls. Your bedside manners… nothing but number one. Thank you again. Let’s hope we don’t meet again, but otherwise yep, thank you.’

Personal Journey and Past Struggles

Evans’ announcement about his mother’s health comes shortly after he garnered significant attention for his candid interview about his sexuality. In an emotional conversation, he revealed his struggles with homelessness since the end of his first-grade playing career.

He disclosed his past aspirations and internal conflicts, stating, ‘I had three goals in life: to play NRL, to buy my parents a house, and then I wanted to top myself. Because I was living in denial, from a young age I know that I’m gay but I went down every other avenue to build up these walls to be someone to escape who I am.’

Evans spoke about the profound impact of his confession, remarking, ‘I still can’t believe I’m here talking to you, this is definitely my worst nightmare, but I know if I surrender, it’s the start to a new life.’ The former Sydney Roosters player also touched upon his experiences with addiction.

He emphasized the weight of his long-held secret, saying, ‘I’ve carried (hiding my sexuality) around my whole life. I’m here today to show people that you don’t have to live like that. Even now I feel a bit more free, just by saying it out loud, I’ve brought it to the light.’
