Veteran Comedian Tom Dreesen Passes Away at 86

Tom Dreesen, a celebrated comedian renowned for his extensive work as Frank Sinatra’s longtime opening act, has died. He was 86 years old.

Dreesen’s family confirmed his passing in a heartfelt statement shared on his official social media page. The statement indicated that he died early Wednesday morning. His children conveyed his deep appreciation for his fans, sharing, “He wanted you all to know how much joy you brought him through the years. He said to tell you that he loved you all. May he rest in peace.” The cause of death was not disclosed by his family.

A Career Defined by Laughter and Landmark Partnerships

For an impressive 13 years, Dreesen graced stages as the warm-up comedian for the legendary Frank Sinatra, accompanying him on tour before the iconic crooner’s death in 1998.

Beyond his work with Sinatra, Dreesen carved a significant niche in comedy history by co-founding one of the earliest interracial comedy duos, “Tim and Tom,” in 1969 with fellow comedian Tim Reid. This partnership was widely recognized as a pioneering effort in breaking down racial barriers in the entertainment industry.

Dreesen was a frequent collaborator with other prominent entertainers. He provided comic relief for music legends such as Smokey Robinson, Liza Minnelli, and Gladys Knight, and was a regular cohort of Rat Pack member Sammy Davis Jr.

Beyond Stand-Up: Film and Television Presence

While celebrated for his stand-up performances, Dreesen also built a notable career in film and television. His acting credits include appearances in the Mel Brooks science fiction parody Spaceballs (1987), the television film Columbo: Murder In Malibu (1990), and the Andy Kaufman biopic Man On The Moon.

Final Television Appearance

Dreesen’s final television appearance occurred just one week prior to his death, on the comedy show Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen. This program recently garnered attention when it was selected as a replacement for another late-night show. Dreesen had a long-standing relationship with host Byron Allen, having served as a mentor figure since the mid-1970s. His appearance on Comics Unleashed marked his fourth time on the series.

He was also a well-received guest on other popular late-night programs, including Late Show with David Letterman.
