A man has been sentenced to nearly three decades in prison for the brutal killing of his love rival with a samurai sword. Michael Bretton, 41, was found guilty of murder and received a 30-year sentence for the fatal attack on Craig Hurcombe, 39, at his workplace in Somerset on January 1. The court heard how Bretton had become fixated on Kate Saunders, who had previously dated Bretton but was in a relationship with Mr. Hurcombe at the time of the incident.

A Crime Fueled by Jealousy

The tragic events unfolded after Ms. Saunders ended her casual relationship with Bretton, whom she met online, and rekindled her romance with Mr. Hurcombe. This rejection reportedly left Bretton consumed by jealousy. Prosecutors detailed a pattern of obsessive behavior following the breakup, including Bretton allegedly placing GPS trackers on the couple’s vehicles and loitering near Mr. Hurcombe’s place of employment. An altercation at a pub, which led to police involvement, and a subsequent incident where Bretton slashed the tires of Mr. Hurcombe’s car on New Year’s Eve, further escalated the animosity.

Bretton returned to Mr. Hurcombe’s workplace the following day, January 1, intending to confront him. It was during this encounter that Bretton inflicted a fatal wound using a samurai sword. A post-mortem examination confirmed that Mr. Hurcombe died from a single stab injury. The prosecution characterized the act as a “premeditated and cold-blooded execution.”

Deceptive Actions Post-Murder

Following the murder, Bretton engaged in further deceptive actions. He reportedly removed the SIM card from Mr. Hurcombe’s phone and placed it into his own device. From Mr. Hurcombe’s phone, Bretton then sent text messages to Ms. Saunders, attempting to manipulate the situation. These messages allegedly urged her to be more lenient with Bretton and suggested reconciliation.

The deception continued until Mr. Hurcombe’s mother contacted Ms. Saunders, inquiring about her son’s whereabouts after his employer reported him missing. This prompted a wider search and ultimately led to the discovery of the crime.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

During the trial at Bristol Crown Court, Bretton maintained that Mr. Hurcombe had died accidentally, claiming he fell onto a metal shaft. However, a jury unanimously rejected this defense and returned a guilty verdict for murder on July 31. His Honour Judge Hart, delivering the sentence, condemned Bretton’s actions, referring to him as a “cowardly and secret assassin.”

The judge emphasized Bretton’s motivation, stating, “You were motivated by jealousy about a refusal to accept that you have been supplanted in her affections.” He further noted, “It wasn’t love…you took him by surprise. You didn’t give him the slightest chance to live.” Bretton also faced a charge of stalking Ms. Saunders, to which he was also held accountable.

Family’s Grief and Impact

The loss of Craig Hurcombe has had a profound impact on his family and friends. His mother, Nicola Hurcombe, shared her immense grief, describing the murder as “brutal” and “horrific.” She expressed the deep pain caused by Bretton’s actions, particularly the deceptive messages sent after the killing, which added to the family’s distress.

Mrs. Hurcombe highlighted the widespread affection for her son, noting that over 210 people attended his funeral. “It is a testament to the impact that Craig had on so many lives and that his memory will always live on with us all,” she stated, underscoring the deep void left by his absence.

Investigating Officer’s Remarks

Detective Inspector Neil Meade of the Avon and Somerset Police’s Major Crime Investigations team described the fatal attack as “horrendous.” He reflected on the terror Mr. Hurcombe must have experienced in his final moments. “I don’t think you can imagine the fear he must’ve gone through, firstly, being threatened and stabbed with a samurai sword,” DI Meade commented. “To meet his end in such tragic, scary circumstances – you cannot imagine the fear going through Craig’s mind that night.”

DI Meade concluded by emphasizing the horrifying nature of the crime and the victim’s final moments: “He may not have even seen it was Michael Bretton, but he would’ve no doubt seen the sword. A horrendous set of circumstances and a scary, lonely place to lose your life.” The 30-year prison sentence aims to reflect the severity of the crime and provide a measure of justice for the victim and his grieving family.
