From March 2027, a new, modern vessel, the Scillonian IV, will take over the service. This significant upgrade is part of a comprehensive £40 million investment program spearheaded by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, aimed at modernizing passenger and freight services.
The Scillonian IV is currently being designed at a shipyard in Vietnam and is engineered to address the challenges of the sea route. It will feature advanced ‘roll and pitch reduction systems’ specifically designed to counteract the effects of the swells, thereby significantly reducing passenger nausea and improving comfort. Furthermore, the new ship will incorporate modern propulsion technology, promising enhanced efficiency and a reduced environmental impact.
With a planned capacity to carry up to 600 passengers, the Scillonian IV will offer a 24% increase in passenger capacity compared to the Scillonian III’s current limit of 485. This larger capacity, combined with potentially faster journey times, is expected to better accommodate the growing tourism market and improve the overall travel experience.

“While we look forward to welcoming Scillonian IV, we know how fondly Scillonian III is regarded by so many,” Reid stated. “When she does sail off into the sunset for a new adventure, it will certainly be a little bit sad.” The sentiment is shared by many who have relied on, worked on, or simply enjoyed passage aboard the iconic ferry.
