Fiery Exchange Over National Flag Display on GB News

A spirited debate regarding the display of the St. George’s flag on public property escalated into a heated confrontation on GB News. The discussion, which centered on council warnings against flying the English flag during the World Cup, saw guest Susan Boniface tell presenter Matt Goodwin to “get back in his box.”

Contrasting Views on National Symbolism

Goodwin ed frustration, stating, “We live in a two-tier Britain, very simple. There is absolutely no problem at all with flying the Palestine flag, with flying the Black Lives Matter flag, with flying the Pride flag, with flying the Ukraine flag. You can fly any flag you want, often off a lamppost in public buildings, except the national flag, because our political class wants us to feel ashamed and embarrassed of who we are. But the patriotic majority of people out there, they will not follow that order.”

Boniface countered Goodwin’s assertion, suggesting he might be out of touch. “Don’t look at me like that. I don’t think Matt’s been outside because loads of people are flying the England flag out,” she remarked, before requesting he allow her to finish her point. She then highlighted an instance in her local town, governed by a Reform council, where residents were reportedly asked to remove national flags from council properties.

Freedom of ion and Intimidation Concerns

As the discussion continued, the exchange intensified over the presence of Palestinian flags on council buildings. Goodwin questioned the emotional impact on British Jews, asking, “How do you think British Jews feel in this country that have spent years seeing hate imposed on them during marches and protests and flags which have been raised to intimidate them?”

Boniface responded by emphasizing the right to freedom of protest, clarifying that certain flags, such as those representing the Islamic State or Hamas, are prohibited as they are considered terrorist symbols and can lead to arrest. She then directly addressed Goodwin’s interruptions, stating, “Actually, you’ve had a go at me for speaking over you repeatedly. And when I speak, you shout over me. So just get back in your box for a little moment, let me do my bit and then you can have your word, okay?”

Boniface proceeded to explain that councils were advising the removal of flags due to safety concerns. Goodwin, however, maintained that his question had not been adequately answered. The debate was ultimately brought to a close by host Dawn Neesom.
