Growing Alarm Over Period Product Ingredients

Recent scientific investigations have revealed potentially hazardous substances in menstrual products, including detectable levels of arsenic, pesticide residues exceeding drinking water limits by 40-fold, and significant concentrations of PFAS chemicals in reusable items. Unlike candles and cosmetics, period products currently face minimal regulatory oversight in many markets.

Health Implications of Chronic Exposure

Medical experts emphasize that while acute poisoning cases remain undocumented, the primary concern revolves around long-term use. “The critical issue lies in cumulative, repeated exposure through internal application over decades,” explained Valentina Milanova, founder of a gynecological health company. “Even minimal amounts of endocrine-disrupting compounds become significant when absorbed monthly through highly permeable tissues.”

Specialists note that certain contaminants found in menstrual products may contribute to:

  • Hormonal system interference
  • Immune function disruption
  • Increased inflammatory responses
  • Vaginal microbiome imbalances

Selecting Safer Menstrual Products

Health advocates recommend prioritizing brands that voluntarily disclose full ingredient lists and contamination testing results. “Transparency in manufacturing processes serves as a significant indicator of product safety,” stated Justyna Strzeszynska, CEO of a period care technology firm.

Red Flags for Consumers

Experts caution against relying on marketing claims like “natural” or “non-toxic” without verified testing data. Additional recommendations include:

  • Avoiding fragrances, dyes, and antimicrobial treatments
  • Rotating between internal and external products during cycles
  • Researching manufacturer testing protocols

Contamination Origins in Menstrual Items

Industrial analysis indicates that contaminants typically enter products through agricultural processes rather than intentional addition. “Cotton plants naturally absorb metals from soil and irrigation systems,” Strzeszynska clarified. “Organic certification alone doesn’t eliminate this risk, as arsenic and other elements occur naturally in many environments.”

Regulatory Landscape Developments

Pressure mounts for legislative reforms as studies accumulate. Current regulations vary significantly:

  • US classification as medical devices
  • UK/EU reliance on general safety standards without specific contaminant testing

Advocacy groups are pushing for comprehensive menstrual product legislation that would mandate full ingredient disclosure and standardized safety testing. Industry representatives acknowledge progress but describe regulatory harmonization as “fragmented and gradual.”

Several manufacturers have implemented self-regulated testing protocols exceeding legal requirements, with some publishing results publicly. “We initiated contaminant screening five years before it became industry discussion,” Milanova noted regarding her company’s practices. “Consumers deserve complete transparency about products used in sensitive biological environments.”
