Tuchel Defends England’s Left-Wing Approach Amidst Scrutiny

Head coach Thomas Tuchel has brushed aside suggestions that players like Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold are the immediate solution to England’s struggles against defensive teams. He views such calls as a natural, but often misguided, reaction to a draw, pointing out that other top nations like Spain, Brazil, and Portugal have also experienced similar results.

England’s recent stalemate against Ghana has inevitably led to public debate, with former players advocating for different tactical approaches. However, Tuchel, a proponent of trusting his established methods, remains steadfast. While acknowledging the need for improvements, particularly against stubborn opposition like Panama, he intends to rely on the players he trusts, even if some are underperforming.

Rashford Eager for Starting Role, Gordon’s Threat Questioned

A key area of concern for England is the left flank, where the current setup has lacked penetration. Anthony Gordon, deployed in the winger role, has yet to make a significant impact in two matches. This has opened the door for Marcus Rashford, who is reportedly keen to earn a starting position. When pressed on the matter, Tuchel was direct in his assessment.

“Marcus is in a good place, but when he started (in the first warm-up match against New Zealand) he was not as decisive as Anthony, that’s just it,” Tuchel stated. “We then had a very good match against Costa Rica with Anthony and the unit on the left side. They were so good, I thought, ‘OK, the left side is solved, this unit, they find their link’.”

This effective unit involved Gordon, left-back Nico O’Reilly, and central midfielders Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham. However, the pre-tournament fluency has not materialized in the competitive matches.

“The unit on the left has not provided the same quality as they did against Costa Rica,” Tuchel elaborated. “It turns out we played the first match (versus Croatia) and they’re not clicking. I’m not even sure why, but it was not the same amount of connection, not the same amount of penetration, not the same amount of verticality, and this was the same in the second match.”

Tuchel’s Faith in ‘Finishers’ and Process

Despite these observations, Tuchel is not reconsidering his squad selections, nor is he necessarily inclined to drop Gordon. He sees Rashford, with his individual skill, as potentially more effective against Panama’s defensive setup, but views him primarily as a potent “finisher” off the bench.

Sources indicate that Rashford himself desires a starting role. “Marcus is just also very good from the bench, and it’s sometimes nice to hold someone back,” Tuchel explained. “He struggled to have the same influence for us from the start, and yet from the bench he was always pushing. He’s in a good place. He’s pushing. He’s a candidate to start, but the left side in general, no matter who plays, needs to click a bit more and provide a bit more threat.”

The strategic advantage of having Rashford as an impact substitute is undeniable. His ability to exploit tired defenses, as demonstrated by his goal against Croatia after coming on, provides a significant threat. Tuchel’s confidence in his established processes remains unshaken by a single less-than-ideal performance.

Tuchel’s Unwavering Confidence in the United States

Arriving in the United States, Tuchel exudes an “Empire state of mind,” unperturbed by the performances of other teams in the tournament. “Nothing I have seen (at the World Cup) scares me – I’m not scared in general,” he asserted. “We feel confident enough to be ready to compete on any level. I see, of course, good teams. I see high-quality individual players who decide matches. But I still see our group as one of the most difficult.”

He recounted a message from a “very famous colleague” who warned that England’s second game would be their most difficult, highlighting the respect Tuchel holds for their opponents. “Then, we need to trust our players and respect them. It helps no one if we question them now.”

Navigating Stubborn Defenses: Tuchel’s Philosophy

Questions will inevitably arise if Tuchel fails to devise a winning strategy against Panama. The debate among pundits regarding patience versus intensity underscores the challenge. Tuchel acknowledges that breaking down resolute defenses has historically been an issue for England.

“It is normal that it is difficult for us to overcome these type of blocks,” he said. “It was difficult in the Andorra games (1-0 & 2-0). But it is also difficult for club teams who have more training time. I see many matches that look like this.”

Tuchel admits there is no simple “recipe” for success against such opponents. “We will try to find a very active and aggressive approach, but we cannot just be stupid and naive. We cannot just be open and put seven players on the last line and defend with three. That’s not serious.”

He believes the key lies in moments of individual brilliance and improved execution. “Instead, it needs this one moment of quality and a bit more precision, timing and awareness with the crossing. Are we arriving aggressively enough with the cross? How can we shoot more from outside the box, have a deflection and force this goal?”

While England is expected to overcome Panama without relying on fortunate deflections, Tuchel’s approach emphasizes a belief in his plan and the inherent quality of his squad. He aims to minimize reliance on contingency plans, such as the impact Palmer had in a previous tournament. “The highs should not get too high and the lows should not get too low – but I don’t think Ghana was a low,” Tuchel concluded. “It is time to believe and time to keep on going.” Here in the United States this summer, his philosophy appears to be a non-negotiable stance: it is his way or the freeway.
