US Open Golfer Penalized Under New Conduct Rules

Golfer Receives Two-Shot Penalty for On-Course Frustration

Joaquin Niemann, a participant in the US Open, has accepted responsibility for violating a newly implemented rule regarding player conduct, though he ed that the resulting two-shot penalty was overly severe. The challenging Shinnecock Hills course has a long-standing reputation for testing the mettle of professional golfers, and this year’s tournament proved no exception for most of the field across the initial two rounds.

Incident on the Sixth Hole Leads to Penalty

During his opening round on Thursday, Niemann encountered significant difficulties on the sixth hole. After losing two balls off the tee and struggling to navigate the native areas, he found himself in a precarious position. Upon reaching his fifth shot in the rough, Niemann, visibly frustrated by the presence of ants near his ball and denied relief, hurled his club an estimated 50 yards. He subsequently failed to reach the green with his approach shot.

This display of poor conduct resulted in a two-shot penalty assessed by the USGA, under regulations recently introduced to curb unsportsmanlike behavior on the course.

Player’s Reaction to the Penalty

Speaking after his second round on Friday, Niemann did not dispute the occurrence of the incident itself. However, he voiced his opinion that the penalty did not align with the severity of his actions.

“Yeah, I mean, I hit it two times out of bounds on the right, two bad swings,” Niemann stated. “Then, yeah, got pretty frustrated. I’m not someone that likes to be in that behavior. I’m the first one to judge myself when I don’t behave on the golf course.”

Niemann, who recovered impressively to post a five-under 65 on Friday, bringing his tournament total to three-over par, acknowledged his fault in the situation. “Yeah, that was a misbehave from my part. I felt like a little bit extra penalized with [a] two-shot penalty, but I think it is what it is,” he commented. “I think I’m going to learn from it. It definitely kind of helped me a little bit to have a better round today.”

Details of the Relief Request and Frustration

The 27-year-old golfer confirmed that he had requested relief from the referee due to the presence of ants as he prepared for his shot. He described the situation as a result of poor swings and a difficult lie.

“I hit two terrible tee shots, came out of nowhere. Hitting the golf ball at 8:30 p.m., I felt like my body wasn’t quite there,” Niemann explained. “Yeah, I had a bad lie on the third tee shot in between the fairways, and it was a pretty bad lie. I saw a lot of ants there, and I was just asking the referee if they were fire ants, and like, he say, no. To be honest, I was pretty – I wasn’t angry asking him. I was pretty normal, pretty chill, because I knew I needed to keep going and try to shoot the less possible.”

He elaborated on the build-up of his frustration. “After that shot, I hit it, I lay up, and the whole frustration went inside me. I think they blew the horn already. I’m not sure if they did or not, but after I hit that shot, yeah, I was – like all the frustration that came inside me and had my club in my hand, and I couldn’t resist to throw it away.”

Niemann concluded by ing his regret for his actions. “Yeah, I mean, I was looking around. There was no people, obviously. No one there. I’m not proud of it, but yeah, I mean, sometimes, you know, all the expectation of trying to play well and things doesn’t go your way, you get frustrated, and that was me there.”
