Whyteleafe to Wembley: McFarlane’s Chelsea Team Faces Guardiola

Published on

In the FA Cup extra preliminary round on September 1, 2020, Whyteleafe from the eighth tier defeated ninth-tier Glebe 3-1 at Foxbury Avenue. With 232 fans watching, including 30 from Whyteleafe near Croydon, the victory earned £1,125 in prize money. Whyteleafe’s manager Harry Hudson, assistant Calum McFarlane, and player Dan Hogan forged a bond that now propels them toward Wembley.

From Non-League Roots to Chelsea’s Dugout

Today, 38-year-old Calum McFarlane serves as Chelsea’s interim head coach, with 37-year-old Hudson and 28-year-old Hogan as his assistants. They face Pep Guardiola, Pep Lijnders, Kolo Toure, and Manchester City’s analysts in the FA Cup final before 90,000 at Wembley. Their shared history spans Whyteleafe, Glebe, Croydon, Sevenoaks Town, and Corinthian-Casuals, plus coaching at Kinetic Academy, a south London charity aiding underprivileged youths.

Players Credit Trio for Career Boosts

Numerous professionals attribute their success to McFarlane, Hudson, and Hogan. Courtney Clarke, who started for Whyteleafe at 17 in that Glebe win, now plays wing-back for League Two’s Walsall at 23.

“I never thought I would have such top-level coaches in non-League,” Clarke says. “They’re like family to me.”

Clarke trialed at Norwich, West Ham, Leicester, Watford, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Fulham, Charlton, and Millwall before Derby signed him. “Calum and Harry cared about me so much,” he adds. “It was a blessing to have them as my coaches. They helped me believe in myself.”

Clarke faced Chelsea’s Under-21s in the EFL Trophy while McFarlane coached them. “The way he had Chelsea playing, it was wow,” Clarke notes. “If it’s not at Chelsea, he’s going to be a top manager somewhere else.”

McFarlane’s Unlikely Path

From Forest Hill, Lewisham, in a Chelsea-supporting family, McFarlane began coaching at 16 after realizing his playing days ended. He worked youth setups at Fulham and Crystal Palace. In 2012 with Lambeth Tigers, he coached sons of Tromsø’s Thomas Hafstad, leading to a move to Norway’s northernmost club, 217 miles inside the Arctic Circle.

“Calum was the head coach of the Under-11s. Great team,” says Hafstad, now Tromsø’s technical director. “He moved straight into the Under-19s and first-team sessions.” Tromsø qualified for the Europa League, facing Tottenham Hotspur in 2013-14. McFarlane returned to London in 2014 for Kinetic and non-league coaching.

Kinetic boasts 83 players signing pro contracts, including Josh Maja (now West Brom and Nigeria), Kwadwo Baah (Watford forward), and others like Baah, who played under them at Whyteleafe and Kinetic.

“They really helped me, especially in one-on-one sessions,” Baah says. “Both have a good heart. Fingers crossed for the final.”

Helge Orome, ex-Whyteleafe captain and now Wycombe’s player care officer, praises their holistic approach. “They invested time off the pitch,” Orome states. “If you get the person, you get the player. They deserve their opportunity.”

Rise Through Academies to Interim Role

In September 2020, McFarlane left Whyteleafe for Manchester City’s Under-15s, progressing to Under-16s and Under-18s. Hudson assisted Brentford and Wycombe youths. McFarlane moved to Southampton’s Under-18s then Under-21s in 2023 before joining Chelsea’s Under-21s in July 2025.

Enzo Maresca’s New Year’s Day exit elevated McFarlane to interim, despite John Terry’s interest. His debut: 1-1 draw at Etihad versus Guardiola’s 1,012th game. Tactical halftime shifts, including Andrey Santos and advanced Enzo Fernandez, yielded Fernandez’s stoppage-time equalizer. Reece James urged fans to applaud the tracksuited coach.

Liam Rosenior’s arrival integrated McFarlane into first-team staff, with Hudson on Under-21s and Hogan on Under-18s. Rosenior’s sacking reinstated McFarlane as interim. With Hudson and Hogan, Chelsea beat Leeds 1-0 in semis and drew 1-1 at Liverpool, Fernandez scoring again.

Wembley Showdown Awaits

McFarlane eyes history as the first English manager to win FA Cup since Harry Redknapp in 2008, securing Europa League football. By interim’s end, he’ll match Wembley games to Stamford Bridge ones (two each). Owners favor him; Strasbourg or staff roles loom.

From Whyteleafe to Wembley, this trio inspires. Supporters like Clarke, Baah, Orome cheer them on.

McFarlane’s family shares: “We’re absolutely delighted for Calum and incredibly proud. To see him managing in the FA Cup final is special. As lifelong Chelsea fans, we’ll cheer him on. We wish him the very best and hope it ends with a Chelsea win!”
