A leading canine behavior specialist highlights three dog breeds that consistently demonstrate excellent behavior in family settings. Will Atherton, founder of a renowned dog training academy, shares his expertise based on years of professional experience.
In a popular video, Atherton addresses a key question from prospective owners: “People often ask me which breeds are the worst behaved, but here’s a more interesting question. Which breeds do I almost never get called out to help with?”
He notes these breeds stand out due to their rarity in behavior consultations, despite their popularity. As a clinical canine behaviorist, Atherton observes patterns in problematic cases but praises these three for their cooperative nature and ease of training.
Labrador Retriever
Labrador Retrievers top the list for their outstanding qualities. “They’re super popular and it’s no secret why I think they’re the best dog breed on the planet,” Atherton states. He adds with humor that it’s a “shame” they don’t present more challenges, as he enjoys training them.
Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers follow closely with similar traits. Atherton describes them as sharing the Labrador’s amazing qualities but being “a little more fun, playful and goofy,” compared to the more serious Labs. “Golden Retrievers are also friendly, cooperative and usually very responsive to training,” he explains.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
The third choice, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, may surprise some. “When they’re raised with the right structure and leadership, they’re often incredibly affectionate, loyal and stable dogs,” Atherton advises. He emphasizes that any breed can face issues without proper foundations, but these three naturally cooperate and respond well to training.
Viewers echo this praise. One pet owner shares: “I have a six-month old Staffy, my second dog ever, and she’s incredibly easy to get along with. She picks up commands very quickly. The only issue is that she’s a bit too friendly with every dog and person we meet on our walks.”
Another adds: “We’ve had Labradors, Retrievers, amongst other breeds and the Staffy is the best for me. I’m on my second one and he’s just amazing.” A third declares: “I have never loved a dog as much as our Staffy! Wonderful breed! 10-years old and going strong!”
