A Father’s Disappearing Act: Mexico ’86 and a 20-Year Silence

Garry Hardwicke, a proud father captured in a photograph with his arm around his three-year-old daughter, embarked on an adventure that would redefine his family’s history. Driven by the allure of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, cheap beer, and the promise of sunshine, Hardwicke left his partner and daughter behind for what he described as a simple trip to buy milk.

He, along with four friends—Gary Allen, Stuart Bates, David Arnold, and Steve Dawson—all fervent supporters of Wolverhampton Wanderers, secretly planned to travel 5,000 miles to follow England. The tale of the man who left for milk and ended up in Mexico has become a legendary anecdote among football enthusiasts, often dismissed as folklore. However, the reality is far more complex and poignant.

A Stolen Childhood and a Delayed Reunion

Hardwicke did not return home even after England’s World Cup journey concluded with a controversial quarter-final exit. Instead, he continued to the United States, establishing a new life and finding work in construction in Atlanta. For five years, his daughter, Nicole Hill, now 27, had no contact with her father.

“My mother is still fuming about it forty years on,” Nicole Hill shared recently, recounting her father’s story from a pub in Huddersfield, not far from where his ashes were scattered just weeks prior. Garry, then a chef and a dedicated Wolves fan, had only confided his plans to his sister and close friends, asking them to keep his departure a secret from his girlfriend, Nicole’s mother.

The ‘Disco Firm’ and a Fateful Journey

Garry and his companions, who referred to themselves as ‘The Disco Firm,’ were primarily from Stourbridge and Lye in Worcestershire, with the exception of David Arnold, a Birmingham City supporter from Solihull. Their journey took them to Monterrey and Acapulco, where they witnessed every England match before their team’s defeat to Argentina.

Their escapades in Mexico have since been documented in a film titled ‘Lost Down Mexico Way,’ which chronicles their enduring friendship over the decades. During their time abroad, some members of the group even managed to convince local women they were prominent England players of the era.

Gary Allen recalled the vibrant atmosphere, stating, “The locals had never seen anything like us; we were on the pop every night.” He described finding affordable accommodation with an adjacent bar, which proved to be an ideal base for their adventures. The group’s youthful exuberance led to playful interactions, with some of them posing as national team stars to gain attention.

A Darker Turn and New Beginnings

However, the trip was not without its perils. Following England’s elimination, a bout of violence erupted in a stadium filled with hostile fans, a consequence of the recent Falklands War. Garry reportedly fell from a bridge while being chased, sustaining severe injuries including a fractured skull and broken limbs. Arnold was also injured, stabbed in the leg with a flagpole.

After the tournament, the group decided to remain in South Padre, securing jobs in the hospitality sector. None of them returned to the UK immediately, opting instead to build new lives in the US. They eventually settled, married, and collectively fathered 14 children. One of them even married a former Miss Mexico beauty queen.

“I had three or four jobs within the first few weeks, and your accent got you women,” Allen remarked about their early days in America. Garry made his home in Atlanta, later relocating to Florida, where he lived until his passing from pancreatitis and severe liver damage two years ago. He maintained a passion for rock music and attended festivals well into his sixties.

A Daughter’s Long Wait and Ultimate Connection

While Garry built a life across the Atlantic, Nicole was raised in Pensnett by her mother and stepfather, whom she considers her true father. Now a 42-year-old veterinary receptionist with two children of her own, Nicole had no memories of her biological father. “I used to just class him as a sperm donor,” she admitted.

Her first recollection of seeing Garry was at the age of eight. Despite her mother, Janet, cutting ties with Garry, her parents, who had initially introduced the couple, arranged for him to secretly meet his daughter. However, Janet discovered the clandestine meetings when a friend reported seeing Nicole with a stranger in a park. This led to a significant argument between Janet and her mother, resulting in Nicole and her parents moving away from Stourbridge to Pensnett.

It would be nearly two decades before Nicole heard from Garry again. Pregnant and attending a hen party, she received a Facebook message: “I think I’m your dad.” Initially reacting with anger, Nicole eventually began messaging him. Persuaded by her ex-partner, she agreed to meet him at a bar in Huddersfield. Garry, visibly nervous, proudly introduced Nicole to the waitresses as his daughter and presented her with an orchid, which she still keeps.

“He was really nervous, but we had the conversation, and he gave me his side of the story,” Nicole recounted. “Garry had a good heart. My mum wouldn’t agree because of their relationship, but everybody who meets him said he had this aura.” She expressed forgiveness for his abandonment, acknowledging his immaturity at the time.

In the subsequent years, they maintained contact, and Nicole introduced Garry to her children at Castle Hill. She had planned a visit to Florida, but Garry fell ill. “That was sad, really,” she reflected. “Because it took me a long time to accept him back, and as we started to build that relationship, he died.” Nicole scattered some of his ashes at Castle Hill and recently returned to view the documentary about his adventure.

Enduring Friendships and a Legacy Documented

The remaining members of ‘The Disco Firm’ have dedicated the documentary to Garry and are planning a reunion at the upcoming World Cup. Gary Allen stated, “The trip made us grow up and realize there was more to life than Stourbridge and Lye. We had to get jobs, and the opportunities were better there than back home, so it was a no-brainer, really.” He described his friends as brothers, emphasizing their lifelong bond.

Allen went on to build a successful company in the sewage and drain equipment industry, achieving an annual turnover of $20 million before retiring. Stuart Bates, a father of four, has found success in the car industry in Houston, Texas. David Arnold remains in Mexico, where he heads a school in Monterrey, is married to a former Miss Mexico, and has raised four daughters.

Fiona, Garry’s sister, expressed a sense of pride in her brother’s infamous trip. “I really didn’t blame him, and I’m glad he did it. Because you can make it over there, and he was having such a blast. Here at the time, there were no jobs, and he found work there.”
