Karl Stefanovic Reportedly Sacked by Channel Nine After Podcast Controversy

Published on

Reports indicate that television presenter Karl Stefanovic has been dropped by Channel Nine following significant backlash over a controversial podcast interview. The interview featured Tommy Robinson, a British far-right activist.

Podcast Controversy and Fallout

Stefanovic released the interview on his YouTube channel podcast, ‘The Karl Stefanovic Show,’ on Wednesday. However, the content was quickly removed from the platform after facing widespread public criticism. This move has reportedly led to the end of his tenure with the network.

Speculation suggests that Stefanovic may have made his final appearance on the breakfast program. Network executives were reportedly engaged in urgent discussions to determine the host’s future. Stefanovic is currently on a scheduled two-week leave in the United Kingdom.

Sources close to the situation suggest that both Stefanovic and the network are expected to involve legal representatives to finalize the terms of his departure.

Contractual Obligations and Network Response

Stefanovic, a long-standing figure at Nine for approximately 25 years, reportedly has six months remaining on his current contract, with a value exceeding $1 million.

Prior to these developments, there were reports of Nine management devising strategies to manage the public relations impact of Stefanovic’s recent interviews and public statements. Some analyses suggested these measures could lead to an early termination of his contract.

The controversy intensified this week with Stefanovic’s publication of the interview featuring Tommy Robinson, a divisive figure in right-wing commentary. The interview, which delved into topics such as Islam, immigration, and Australian politics, was removed from major podcast platforms and Stefanovic’s YouTube channel less than 12 hours after its release.

Activist Response and Political Support

An activist group, Mad F**king Witches (MFW), announced a campaign against Stefanovic regarding the interview. The organization, known for its past boycotts of media personalities, stated that the podcast’s removal would not deter their efforts and expressed frustration at what they perceived as an attempt to dismiss their concerns.

In response to the situation, a spokesperson for Channel Nine clarified that ‘The Karl Stefanovic Show’ is an independent production with no affiliation to the network. The spokesperson stated, ‘Nine has no involvement, including in the guest selection and other editorial processes. However, Nine is taking this matter seriously.’

Meanwhile, Pauline Hanson, a political figure and self-described ‘good friend’ of Stefanovic, has publicly supported him. Hanson has uploaded the controversial interview to her own YouTube channel, accusing Channel Nine of attempting to terminate Stefanovic’s employment over the broadcast.

Hanson’s Criticism and Justification

Hanson criticized Channel Nine’s management and performance, arguing that Stefanovic’s interview aimed to highlight crucial issues concerning immigration and extremism that Australians need to address. She compared the situation to past perceived shortcomings in network ratings and management decisions.

Hanson concluded her statement by questioning whether Channel Nine had become comparable to the ABC in its approach.

Tommy Robinson’s Background

Tommy Robinson has been a prominent figure in right-wing activism in the UK for nearly a decade. His public record includes multiple convictions for offenses such as violence, public order violations, contempt of court, stalking, and harassment of journalists, alongside financial and immigration-related fraud.

Stefanovic’s Podcast Content

Stefanovic, a well-known Australian television personality, launched his podcast in January. The show has featured interviews with various right-wing figures, including Pauline Hanson, Barnaby Joyce, Sean Bell, former Liberal prime ministers Tony Abbott and John Howard, and Coalition politicians Alex Antic, Matt Canavan, and Jacinta Nampijinpa Price.
