Lizzo Celebrates ‘Fat Liberation Month’ in Bikini Amid Health Journey

Published on

Singer Lizzo recently shared a series of poolside photos on Instagram, showcasing her figure in a metallic pink bikini. The images, posted over the weekend, featured the 38-year-old artist in a triangle bikini top and matching bottoms. In her caption, Lizzo declared it “Happy Fat Liberation Month” and encouraged other women, particularly those over 200 pounds, to “go outside n POP sumthin.” She appeared relaxed, enjoying the sun with oversized sunglasses and her strawberry blonde hair styled down.

Lizzo’s Health and Body Positivity Journey

This celebratory post arrives a few months after Lizzo marked her 38th birthday, also highlighting her significant weight loss transformation at that time. The singer has been open about her health journey, including her past struggles with binge eating. In an interview with Women’s Health UK in August 2025, she detailed dedicating over a year to her weight loss efforts, which resulted in a 60-pound reduction through diet and exercise.

Lizzo described her previous eating habits as sometimes leading to physical discomfort. “There were times when I would eat so much that my stomach hurt,” she recalled. “When I was done, I would be so uncomfortable, I couldn’t breathe and wouldn’t let anyone know.” She admitted to hiding these tendencies, contrasting it with her current feelings of pride in her appearance and health.

Navigating Food and Emotion

The artist elaborated on her complex relationship with food, explaining how emotional states influenced her eating patterns. “I would hide it. I had so much food noise and connected so much emotion to food,” Lizzo stated. “If I was sad, anxious, stressed or working a lot, I would snack and just eat constantly.” She further revealed that she would sometimes order multiple meals and desserts secretly after others had left.

Despite her weight loss, Lizzo maintains a nuanced perspective on body image and the concept of body positivity. “I like how I look now. I still think I’m big. I’m still wearing plus-size clothing. I have the same rolls,” she said. She emphasized that her current appearance includes “the same belly, the same thighs – I think I’m just a smaller version.”

Defining Body Positivity

Lizzo offered her definition of body positivity, stating, “Body positivity has nothing to do with staying the same.” She articulated it as “the radical act of daring to exist loudly and proudly in a society that told you you shouldn’t exist.” This perspective underscores her belief that embracing one’s body, regardless of size or changes, is a powerful act of self-acceptance and defiance against societal pressures.

The singer’s recent Instagram posts, including a carousel of images and a video set to Beyoncé’s song “Morning Dew (Donk)” on her Instagram Story, have garnered significant attention. These moments capture her confidence and her continued engagement with themes of self-love and liberation, framed within her ongoing personal health journey.

Broader Context of ‘Fat Liberation Month’

The declaration of “Fat Liberation Month” by Lizzo aligns with broader social movements advocating for the acceptance and rights of fat individuals. This movement challenges fatphobia and promotes the idea that all bodies deserve respect and liberation, regardless of size. It emphasizes dismantling societal biases and celebrating fat bodies in all their diversity. Lizzo’s public platform amplifies these messages, encouraging dialogue and self-acceptance among her extensive fanbase.

Her openness about her weight loss journey, coupled with her advocacy for fat liberation, presents a complex and evolving narrative around body image. It highlights the personal nature of health decisions while simultaneously championing inclusivity and challenging conventional beauty standards. Lizzo’s approach suggests that one can pursue personal health goals while still embracing and advocating for the broader fat acceptance movement.

The singer’s continued presence in the public eye, marked by her music and outspoken advocacy, makes her a significant figure in discussions about body image, self-esteem, and societal expectations. Her recent posts serve as a reminder of the ongoing conversation surrounding body diversity and the importance of individual autonomy in defining one’s relationship with their body and health.
