Christmas Day Triumphs in Rain-Soaked Derby
The prestigious Derby at Epsom saw an unexpected victor as Christmas Day, trained by Aidan O’Brien, powered through the sodden turf to secure a remarkable 12th win for his handler in the nation’s premier Classic race. The 7-1 outsider demonstrated impressive stamina, leading from the outset and never appearing in doubt as it crossed the finish line, fending off a late surge from Maltese Cross.
Jockey’s Elation and Horse’s Effortless Performance
Winning jockey Ronan Whelan expressed his disbelief at the ease of the victory. “I crossed the line and I couldn’t believe I won so easy,” Whelan stated. “Aidan told me to keep it simple. The horse did it so easily – he loves the ground and it felt so effortless.” Whelan also conveyed his gratitude to his family and girlfriend, who were present to witness the triumph. “I wish I was as cool a customer as the horse was. He’s a gent and a credit to all who work with him.”
Strategic Ride and Challenging Conditions
Christmas Day, ridden by Ronan Whelan, was considered the third string from the O’Brien stable. Despite this, the horse was well-supported at 7-1 and was expertly positioned behind his stablemate, Action, who set the early pace. Christmas Day made its move on the home turn, seizing the lead. In the challenging, wet conditions, several contenders, including O’Brien’s more favored stablemates, struggled to gain ground. However, the son of 2012 Derby hero Camelot maintained a strong gallop, ultimately winning by a comfortable two and three-quarter lengths.
Maltese Cross and James J Braddock Secure Places
Maltese Cross finished strongly to claim second place, proving to be the best of the home contenders. James J Braddock secured third position in the highly competitive race.
Favorite’s Setback and Steward’s Inquiry
The favorite, Benvenuto Cellini, also trained by O’Brien, experienced a significant setback at the start of the race. One of its hooves became caught in the starting stalls, prompting an inquiry from the stewards. Concerns were raised that the horse might be declared a non-runner due to the unfair start it received.
