Woman Denies Affiliation with Terrorist Group
A 34-year-old woman, facing charges for alleged membership in a terrorist organization and entering a declared conflict zone, has formally declared her renunciation of violent jihad. Rayann El Houli was apprehended last week, eight months after her return from a Syrian camp. She appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday to present a bail application.
Court Hears of Renunciation
During the court proceedings, El Houli’s legal representative, Peter Morrissey SC, emphasized his client’s complete disavowal of ISIS and its violent ideology. “She wants nothing to do with it not now directly or indirectly or in the future,” Morrissey stated, adding that this sentiment extends to her loved ones, particularly her children.
Allegations of Travel to Conflict Zone
thorities allege that El Houli traveled to the Middle East between 2013 and 2014 with the intention of joining ISIS. She was reportedly detained by Kurdish forces in a displaced persons camp in March 2019, following the collapse of the terrorist group. The mother of four subsequently returned to the country on September 25 of the previous year.
The bail hearing is ongoing.
