The possibility of Manchester United offloading goalkeeper Andre Onana this summer has seen a significant uplift. The 30-year-old Cameroonian is among several players slated for departure from Old Trafford during the current transfer window. Onana spent the previous season on loan in Turkey with Trabzonspor, following a challenging period with the English club. He has two years remaining on his contract, set to expire in 2028, but indications point towards a permanent move this summer, with Trabzonspor expressing a strong desire to secure his services permanently.
Transfer Negotiations Underway
Manchester United invested £43.8 million to acquire Onana from Inter Milan in 2023 and aims to recover some of that expenditure through his sale. While a profit on the initial investment appears unlikely, Trabzonspor will still need to meet financial requirements for the 53-time Cameroon international. The Turkish club remains committed to the deal, and club president Ertugrul Dogan has affirmed their financial capacity to complete the transfer.
President Expresses Confidence in Deal
Dogan stated, “We speak with Onana every day. We won’t have any financial difficulties.” He further elaborated that while Trabzonspor is keen to finalize an agreement with Manchester United, the club is prepared to pursue less expensive options if negotiations falter. “We’ll make the necessary sacrifices. I don’t think we will experience any setbacks. But if we do, we will find another goalkeeper of the same quality,” Dogan added.
His initial loan agreement did not include a buy option or obligation. However, wage demands have presented a hurdle in negotiations. The situation could become more complex, as reports suggest Onana’s salary may increase following the club’s qualification for the Champions League.
