Singer Updates Fans on Extensive Impersonation Case
The acclaimed singer-songwriter Morrissey has provided a significant update on his ongoing legal battle against what is being described as “the very worst case of online identity fraud.” The artist, formerly the frontman of The Smiths, first alerted fans to the situation last spring, revealing through his personal website that he was engaged in legal proceedings due to an alleged online impersonation campaign.
An online protection firm, The Web Sheriff, reportedly contacted Morrissey, informing him of a discovered “online campaign of fraud, disinformation and defamation” targeting him. According to statements made on Morrissey Central, the scale of the manipulation is considered among the most severe and malicious encountered by the firm, which has previously assisted high-profile figures such as Beyoncé, Prince, Bob Dylan, Adele, and Radiohead.
Details of the Impersonation Campaign
The elaborate scheme reportedly involves fake websites, social media impersonation, and sustained harassment across platforms including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram – networks Morrissey asserts he has never used. Emerging online data, falsely attributed to Morrissey, is allegedly being used to associate the artist with fabricated narratives intended to damage his career. These fraudulent posts are said to date back several years, with the artist emphasizing his lack of personal presence on such networks and his absence of a smartphone.
Recent communications indicate that the impersonation efforts are now believed to involve nine individuals. These individuals are allegedly using Morrissey’s name to encourage fans to join various political factions and movements. The statements suggest that one of the nine individuals is responsible for approximately 1,800 online messages. Furthermore, it is alleged that another individual involved has connections to a former member of The Smiths and has disseminated messages that have significantly harmed Morrissey’s reputation and character.
Legal Proceedings and Financial Strain
The update reveals that a plan is in motion to pursue police action against the nine individuals, a process that requires the appointment of two legal firms. The financial commitment for this extensive legal endeavor is noted as being beyond Morrissey’s personal capacity to bear. The next steps in the investigation are currently under careful consideration.
Previous reports last year detailed accusations against an individual for publishing a substantial amount of material about Morrissey on a near-daily basis. This individual was also accused of leaving or posting written notes at Morrissey’s residence. The content of these posts was described as relating almost exclusively to ‘far-right’ politics, which are diametrically opposed to Morrissey’s known stance.
Morrissey has been described as a pacifist and apolitical figure, having never joined a political party or voted. The individuals behind the fraudulent activities are accused of creating and perpetuating a globally harmful and inaccurate narrative, leading to the repetition of these falsehoods by the media. This comes amidst past controversies regarding Morrissey’s rumored political leanings, including a public appearance in 2019 wearing a badge for the political party For Britain.
In the past, Morrissey has also made controversial statements, including referring to the Chinese people as a “subspecies,” labeling Hitler as “left wing,” and commenting on the speaking abilities of London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Following criticism for expressing support for Tommy Robinson, founder of the English Defence League, he issued a statement disavowing racism and fascism and expressing support for Muslims.
Recent Career and Tour Updates
Morrissey’s 14th solo album, ‘Make-Up Is A Lie,’ was released in March. He has also announced a European headline tour scheduled for the summer and confirmed plans for a UK tour in December, which notably excludes London dates. These follow a previously billed sole UK concert at The O2 in London earlier in the year.
Earlier this year, Morrissey canceled several US shows citing “artist illness” and an “adverse reaction to a prescription medication.” A live date in Valencia was also axed last month due to “sleep deprivation.”
In other news, Morrissey has claimed credit for the initial concept behind The Smiths’ iconic photograph outside Salford Lads Club and has reportedly corrected Johnny Marr regarding the band’s signing with Rough Trade. He is also slated to headline the CBGB Festival in New York this September, appearing alongside artists such as Patti Smith, Interpol, and Sex Pistols featuring Frank Carter.
