Marathon Match Concludes After Two Days of Delays

Donna Vekic has finally advanced to the quarter-finals of the Queen’s Club Championships, completing a remarkable victory that spanned over 42 hours. Persistent rain has significantly disrupted the WTA 500 event’s schedule, leading to numerous match postponements and cancellations.

A Grueling Second-Round Encounter

The match against Marie Bouzkova initially commenced on Wednesday evening on the Andy Murray Arena. Vekic, who entered the tournament as a lucky loser, was leading 6-5 in the first set when play was halted due to inclement weather. Hopes to resume on Thursday were dashed as the entire day was washed out, with no play possible across the grounds.

The contest finally resumed on Friday morning at approximately 11 am, relocated to Court 5. Both players, having had ample time to rest and reflect on the scoreline, demonstrated fierce determination upon recommencing their second-round battle.

Tiebreak Thriller and Dominant Second Set

Bouzkova managed to hold her serve, forcing a tiebreak that proved to be a true test of endurance and nerve. The momentum swung back and forth, with neither player able to consistently hold serve. Vekic held a commanding 6-2 lead, earning four set points, but ultimately could not convert. The Czech player then had her own opportunity to seal the set, but she too was unable to capitalize. It was Vekic who ultimately secured the tiebreak 11-9 on her seventh set point, a crucial boost to her confidence.

Following the hard-fought first set, Vekic immediately broke Bouzkova’s serve to start the second. While she faced further break points and navigated a tight service game to lead 4-2, Vekic maintained her advantage. A final break of Bouzkova’s serve sealed a 7-6(9) 6-3 victory for the Croatian, marking the culmination of a match that began over two days prior.

Vekic’s Path to the Quarter-finals

The match officially began around 6:20 pm on Wednesday and was suspended less than an hour later. After resuming at 11 am on Friday, Vekic concluded the match at 12:25 pm. Currently ranked World No. 76, Vekic earned her spot in the main draw after Marta Kostyuk’s withdrawal. She defeated British teenager Mika Stojsavljevic in the opening round before her lengthy encounter with Bouzkova.

Looking Ahead

Vekic is scheduled to face former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova later on Friday afternoon, this time on Court 1, as she continues her quest for the title.
