Pep Guardiola Responds to Attendance Jab After Man City Wembley Win

Published on

Manchester City clinched a spot in the FA Cup final with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Southampton at Wembley Stadium. Jeremy Doku and Nico Gonzalez struck in the final 10 minutes to erase the Championship side’s early lead.

City’s Wembley Dominance Under Guardiola

This marked Manchester City’s 23rd visit to Wembley since Pep Guardiola assumed charge ahead of the 2016/17 season. During that span, the team has secured three FA Cup titles, five League Cups, and three Community Shields, cementing their status as England’s top force.

Press Conference Exchange Sparks Buzz

In the post-match press conference, Guardiola noted the sparse media turnout, joking: “The game looks like it’s not important. But the good ones are here, right?” A journalist fired back: “Like your support!”

With an unsold block visible in the stands, the quip highlighted attendance concerns. Guardiola, who has voiced frustrations over fan backing before, replied: “Yeah, yeah, maybe, yeah, you’re right. They will come to the final, you will see.”

Guardiola’s Previous Fan Support Comments

Guardiola has urged stronger Etihad Stadium support in the past. In 2023, after fans booed at halftime during a 4-2 win over Tottenham—despite trailing at the break—he remarked: “They were silent for 45 minutes. They booed because we were losing; maybe it’s the same as our team—they are so comfortable winning four Premier Leagues in five years.”

Social Media Backlash Over Journalist Remark

The journalist’s comment drew criticism online for overlooking fan challenges. Amos Murphy, a Manchester City supporter, Daily Express writer, and founder of the City Ramble Podcast, posted on X: “As if an accredited reporter deemed it acceptable/funny to say that. Has the privilege of being paid to cover football, but fancied a pop at the fans who pay their cash on extortionate tickets/ travel.”

For a fanbase with working-class roots, frequent London trips pose financial and logistical strains. Average Manchester-to-London train fares hover around £100, and scheduling often complicates travel plans.
