A Radical Shift for A Plague Tale Series
The latest entry in the acclaimed A Plague Tale series, tentatively titled Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, marks a significant departure from its predecessors. Gone are the signature stealth mechanics and the familiar narrative focus on siblings Amicia and Hugo navigating plague-ravaged France. Instead, this new installment shifts its setting and protagonist entirely, offering a fresh, albeit potentially surprising, experience for fans.
Introducing Sophia: A New Protagonist’s Journey
The central figure in Resonance is Sophia, a character previously encountered in A Plague Tale: Requiem as a mentor to Amicia. While her past was hinted at – a Greek adventurer who fled a convent in search of her father – this new game delves deep into her origins. Set fifteen years prior to the events of the earlier titles, the narrative follows Sophia as she explores a temple on the Greek island of Crete. This location holds a deep personal significance, having been the subject of vivid childhood dreams connected to a larger legend, and crucially, to the Macula – the supernatural plague that controls rats and drives the series’ overarching plot.
Weaving Ancient Myths with Present Dangers
Central to Resonance is the Greek legend of Theseus and the Minotaur. The game employs a dual-timeline structure to weave this ancient myth into Sophia’s present-day exploration. At key moments within the temple, players are transported back thousands of years to inhabit the body of Theseus himself, experiencing his legendary feats firsthand. One striking example occurs as Sophia approaches a vast inner chamber dominated by a colossal Minotaur statue. In this instance, the player is thrust into Theseus’ perspective as he confronts the same space, but for him, it’s a vibrant arena packed with spectators for a gladiatorial battle. This stark contrast between Sophia’s solitary exploration of ruins and Theseus’ participation in a grand, ritualistic combat highlights the game’s ambitious narrative design.
Combat Takes Center Stage
A core deviation in Resonance is its emphasis on combat. While Amicia and Hugo relied on stealth to survive, Sophia is positioned as a formidable warrior. Reports indicate a complete absence of stealth gameplay, although a producer has cryptically hinted at potential “mysteries” and “something” yet to be revealed. It’s important to note that Amicia would have been born during the events of this game, precluding her appearance as a playable character. This shift to a combat-focused experience is a first for developer Asobo, and early impressions suggest a surprisingly competent system. Inspired by the rhythmic combat found in titles like Ghost of Tsushima, the Batman Arkham series, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, Sophia’s combat is described as a dazzlingly fluid display of blades and strikes, with a lavish repertoire of killing blows. The animations are meticulously crafted, showcasing a depth that includes blocks, parries, dodges, charged attacks, and a unique rope mechanic for ranged disruption. A skill tree allows for progression and unlocking new moves, while collectible swords offer varied combo finishers. Theseus also boasts his own developable moveset, featuring devastating area attacks.
Challenging Encounters and Satisfying Victories
Players can expect to face challenging enemy encounters, particularly when surrounded by multiple foes, including sturdier mini-boss characters. While this can lead to moments of frustration, mastering the game’s combat “dance” is presented as incredibly satisfying, allowing players to carve a path through crowded battlefields.
Puzzles and Exploration: A Familiar Touch
Despite the new combat focus, puzzles and exploration remain vital components of Resonance. Inspirations from Uncharted and Tomb Raider are evident, with puzzle design revolving around light mechanics, reminiscent of previous Plague Tale games. However, the objective shifts from evading rats to navigating the depths of an immense temple. The sense of grandeur, a hallmark of A Plague Tale: Requiem, is amplified here, with the temple descending endlessly into vast, elaborately designed chambers. The architecture itself is a marvel, with some areas evoking Gaudi’s organic style, featuring warped walls and intricate mosaics. The attention to detail in both characters and environments is described as exquisite.
Engaging Puzzles Requiring Thought
A notable aspect of the puzzles is their refusal to simplify for the player, demanding genuine thought and consultation of Sophia’s journal. Similar to Nathan Drake’s journal in Uncharted, Sophia’s contains sketches offering crucial clues. One memorable puzzle involves a tense traversal across a room filled with spike traps, where a light-shedding tool aids in finding a safe path. Unexpected periods of darkness force players to rely on memorization, creating moments of nervous tension. Another puzzle, a symbol-pairing challenge within the inner sanctum where Theseus fights, proved particularly stumped for one observer. Fortunately, assistance was available from Leni, a new character and close friend of Sophia’s. Leni, who accompanies Sophia and may be joined by other familiar or new characters at various points, also serves a crucial mechanical role by offering optional clues when players encounter prolonged difficulty.
A Familiar Heartbeat in a New Form
While Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy represents a bold and substantial departure for the series, the core essence of A Plague Tale remains. The game is characterized by its richly realized, supernatural adventure, steeped in emotion, and presented with cinematic flair. The thrill of embodying a character touched by destiny and embarking on a journey to uncharted territories is a driving force. Although potentially brighter in tone and setting than its predecessors, it is undeniably still an A Plague Tale experience. The game is slated for release on August 15th.
