TLC singer Chilli faces intense backlash over alleged donations to Donald Trump-linked fundraising groups and an accidental repost of a conspiracy theory targeting Michelle Obama.
Michelle Obama Repost Sparks Outrage
Earlier this month, Chilli reposted an Instagram message promoting false claims about Michelle Obama’s voter registration, complete with altered images. The repost drew widespread criticism before both it and the originating Reddit discussion vanished.
In a video statement, Chilli expressed deep respect for the former First Lady. “I have the utmost respect for Michelle Obama, and I would never say or do anything that is disrespectful to her or any woman,” she stated. “I would never do that, and I had no clue that this repost had happened until I started getting phone calls and text messages from everybody.”
Chilli attributed the incident to user interface error, noting the repost button’s proximity to others while scrolling. She emphasized her support for the Obamas, including voting for Barack Obama twice and backing Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative for school exercise programs.
Alleged Donations to Trump-Connected PACs
Scrutiny escalated recently with revelations that Chilli contributed to WinRed and the Trump National Committee JFC. She clarified these were intended for charitable efforts benefiting veterans.
“These are the things that support the veterans,” Chilli explained. “I have always supported them, not just now but for years. This is not just something new.”
In an Instagram post amid the fallout, Chilli firmly rejected political alignment. “I am not MAGA and do not support any of the many policies that are causing great harm to the American people,” she declared. “I made a mistake too many make: I did not read the fine print.”
She believed the funds aided anti-human trafficking causes for veterans, causes close to her heart given her father’s service and her passion for children’s welfare. Chilli requested understanding: “I have learned a valuable lesson and ask for grace as I navigate this.”
Social Media Scrutiny and Prior Controversies
Fans have pointed out Chilli’s follows of conservative influencers, including Joy Villa on Instagram, and Donald Trump Jr. and Tomi Lahren on X. She has yet to comment on these connections.
This marks the second major controversy for Chilli. In 2017, she faced criticism for stating “all lives matter” during an interview on the Black Lives Matter movement. “I personally didn’t go to any marches or anything like that,” she said at the time. “But for me, all lives matter.”
Chilli contextualized her view: “Because there is a time when different groups are targeted for different things. So I just think that what happened, even with the police brutality against these young Black boys and stuff like that — all of that kind of stuff is wrong. Even if it was a Caucasian teen kid that this was happening to, it’s just not right.”
She later clarified her position: “Of course, Black lives matter and the killing of young Black boys is heartbreaking to all of us … My response was inclusive of everyone, but not meant to undervalue the Black Lives Matter movement or to suggest police brutality against Blacks is acceptable.”
