Shots rang out at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner held at the Washington Hilton, prompting the immediate evacuation of Erika Kirk and other high-profile attendees. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were swiftly removed from the stage while hundreds of guests took cover under tables in the ballroom.
Priority Evacuations Amid Chaos
Erika Kirk, whose husband died violently last year, ranked among the first evacuated alongside Vice President JD Vance and members of Trump’s Cabinet. This prioritization highlighted her status during the security response. Derek Myers, a sponsor with Turning Point Action, posted on X: ‘Erika is okay but very upset. She was crying.’
Security teams, including the Secret Service and Metropolitan Police Department, flooded the banquet hall. Shouts of “Out of the way, sir!” and calls to duck echoed as guests sought safety.
Official Investigation and Updates
A White House spokesperson stated: ‘The US Secret Service, in coordination with the Metropolitan Police Department, is investigating a shooting incident near the main magnetometer screening area at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.’ The statement continued: ‘One individual is in custody. The condition of those involved is not yet known, and law enforcement is actively assessing the situation.’
President Trump, attending the event for the first time since 2011 to receive an honor and deliver a speech, later posted on Truth Social: ‘Quite an evening in DC Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely.’ He added: ‘The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we “LET THE SHOW GO ON” but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision shortly.’ Trump noted: ‘Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again.’
About an hour after the incident, the White House announced that the President and First Lady would return to the event.
